The parents are typically the one's taking the lead when the time comes for applying for grants or scholarships. Parents usually have been through this process before and typically know what's best for the future college student. What if the tide was turned though? When you were still in high school the parents will often take care of the necessities for getting you financial assistance. But you are old enough to take care of a simple college scholarship application. It takes some courage, self-confidence, and some excellent academic records to apply for a college scholarship. It's you who will use the scholarship or grant you apply for, so it's now your responsibility.

Getting the application finished for a grant for education is similar to filling out a college application. You need to learn every scholarship opportunity available and make a list of potential prospects that you think will fit your personal needs. Once through with the list, you need to create an application letter and state your achievements (good high school scholastic records and recommendation letters from your high school director and teachers) and you are now on your way on getting into college for less, if not for free.

We have talked about the more conventional way of applying for scholarships. What separates those that are successful in obtaining financial aid for college and those that aren't is the ability to stand out and be unique. There are certain things you need to do in order to give yourself the best chance. Start while you are still in high school, remember, the early bird usually gets the worm. In addition, these financial aid programs are only open in a specific period of time. Once the application closes, you have to wait for another year before you can file for your application. Starting early will give you better chances of getting the best financial aid available.

There is one way that most never think of to get college money. The leadership grant is given to an individual who shows good citizenship. Granted to those who have been active in the public arena, it is simply one more source of money for those who don't have great scholastic aptitude. Local clubs like the Lions Club and the Rotary Club will give out Leadership Grants.

Some may tell you to pray that you might get back requests for interviews. It's best not to worry about the consequences if you have done everything you know you could do. Its time to start the next application.
