Voize reviews Red Cliff

Rachel Chan Suet Kay is the biggest popcorn eater in Malaysia.

The great poet and football fan, Cao Cao.

This is going to be hard to say, but the most expensive film in Asia is rather more like the most expensive documentary. While I am sure of getting my ass kicked by some of the biggest names in Kungfu, that Chinese staple, and the eternal fury of all Ah Bengs, I have to say that Zhuge Liang’s doe eyes fail to distract me from the woodenness of Kaneshiro’s acting. That, and the fact that I must be Lombrosian about his lack of forehead (a mark of intelligence for some). The film begins in the middle of a meatpacking district (yes, I know I’m exaggerating) where people are being sliced by the beard of Guan Yu and are oozing out tomato, I mean blood. This is all very graphic and realistic about how a battle should be and I am truly grateful for not living in the midst of war, where horses trample the good earth to create tsunamis detectable by ear from a distance. The characters fail to exhibit any trace of charisma, with the exception of the great Cao Cao, who I must say is at least evil (the rest have no personality). Cao Cao is, believe it or not, historically acclaimed as a poet, and wants to carve his poetry on a cliff to commemorate his victory. In his spare time he paints (gosh, this is like the perfect man) pictures of Xiao Qiao who is the prettiest model in T…I mean woman in China. Much like Helen of Troy, the rumour mills of Han whisper, quite audibly, that Da Qiao is really the battle prize. Call that a trophy wife, and damn Zhou Yu if he happens to have it. All this drama and no explanation in between. The action just hits you like a wet blanket on a cold morning. And Zhuge Liang doesnt even get his pristine white dress dirty.

The movie’s surprise ending is at a game of football that Cao Cao and men are enjoying (now we know that men have always enjoyed football and the great Cao Cao is no exception) and we are told it is “To Be Continued”…

<a href="http://en.netlog.com/go/out/url=http%3A%2F%2Fvoize.my%2F"target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://voize.my/

Cheers everyone,

My name is Rachel Chan, writer for Voize.my, Malaysian lifestyle and entertainment magazine. We are newly launched and always on the lookout for interesting new talent. It can be in the arts, in comics, in jamming, making music, writing, modelling, photography, writing, filmmaking, designing, looking good, looking weird, whatever. And the one thing which keeps us going are our music reviews! So if anyone has a very very deep interest in any indie band (the more obscure, the better), or a very interesting hobby (like collecting dolls of famous historical figures) or even the more mundane (writing fan comics and fan fiction) and if you want to be famous, please drop us a line.

Seacrest out!

Rachel

VOIZE: EUPHORIA Launch at Sunway Lagoon Resort Hotel and Spa

VOIZE.my

Rachel Chan and Joanna David bring you the feel of the Ministry of Sound.

Joanna was afraid. Beneath her feet were tiny glittering lights that threatened to pull you down into a sea of waves. We tottered and hobbled across an imaginary bridge. The waves churned. We finally reached the other side. Then suddenly, we felt it coming after us. A wave of…

EUPHORIA! The party started as the DJ spun the Milk Shake, an urban clash of NY, LA, KL, and Miami Rap, Baltimore, Reggaeton and Grime. The scene was a creation of the Ministry of Sound, a club well known for its devotion to 24-hour dancing and a massive sound system in the UK. The proof was already in our ears as the 118-speaker strong vibrations began to make our feet move on their own.

You can’t resist dancing when the music’s gotten the best of you. Especially not when the club’s sound system is over 100 000 watts strong - enough to lift a small aircraft. Call it ‘dancing at new heights’. And should you think drink’s gotten the best of you as well, fret not. It could be the two fully vibrating dance floors (even Ministry of Sound London has only one!) that are making your head spin.

And should you fear not seeing your partner’s feet, Euphoria has more light bulbs than a 100km highway! Imagine that! No wonder the DJ booth has more controls than the cockpit of a 747 aircraft. With Euphoria’s emphasis on emulating aircrafts, you can be sure to reach new highs.

And the best thing is, there are three separate lofts for fans of different music. Mix and match and choose your scene. Euphoria is the main dance floor, while The Deq is a lounge-like compartment for those who prefer to savour their drink (or their partner’s eyes) and the last is the basement, where the crowd is a little more niche.

What also makes EUPHORIA special is that it is the first Ministry of Sound London’s own branded nightclub to open in Malaysia, in Sunway Lagoon Resort. It has space enough to accommodate 1500 clubbing enthusiasts all night.

On its official launch on the 2nd of July 2008, the Ministry already had us begging for more Milk Shake in the main arena, and Frisky? at The Deq.

This is to be followed by Mix Tape and Save the Robots on Thursday (3 July 2008), Move and Smoove on Friday (4 July 2008), and Electro Ballroom and Fluid on Saturday (5 July 2008). Elvissa was on Sunday (29 June 2008), Pop! on Monday “(30 June 2008), and Paradise54 on Tuesday (1 July 2008). Milk Shake was exclusively played by DJ Nesh, master of the night, while DJ Ian Ross owned Frisky? without a doubt.

EUPHORIA admits only those 21 and above, so make sure you bring the necessary identification if you look particularly young. That is, a valid photo identification. Door charge is RM 50 in Fridays and Saturdays, RM 40 on Wednesdays and Thursdays, and RM 20 on Sundays to Tuesdays. The door charge includes one drink. Don’t say we didn’t warn you…

To find out more about EUPHORIA, visit <a href="http://en.netlog.com/go/out/url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.euphoria.com.my"target="_blank" rel="nofollow">www.euphoria.com.my

Check out Malaysia's latest lifestyle and entertainment blog, VOIZE.my

In school, its always about the earliest.
