  • crazy semester final

With the approaching of the semester finals, a tons of homework and two tests were full of my schedule. Ten-page term paper with one space, presentation, lab notebook and Statistics assignment were all due next week. If i don't take my time to work on them, it is obvious that I will fail to turn them in on time. Subsequently I will not have enough time to prepare for two tests. It is awful. I can't imagine it any more.

Normally I have a break on Saturdays and study on Sundays at this semester. At this weekend, I did not spend it as usual. Instead, I went to lab to write the term paper and work on lab notebook. I concentrated on them so that I have finished the term paper and half done the lab notebook up to now.

Next week, I have to squeeze some time to review the handout of two classes besides finishing the assignments. It will be the craziest week I will have for this semester. Fortunately, I have the confidence to handle the finals and presentation. I believe I can get 4 points for these two classes.

When the semester is over, I will leave for Orlando and Miami for the winter break soon. How exciting! I am expecting it.

  • My China, MyTibet by Grace Wang

It's unbelive Wang can speak almost ten languages. I am really admiring her no matter how other chinese react based on her behivor on the previous Tibet incidence. I hope she can walk out of the distorting situation as a traitor. Good for her.

Here is an article she wrote and delivered on Washington post. It deserves learning.

I study languages -- Italian, French and German. And this summer -- now that it looks as though I won't be able to go home to China -- I'll take up Arabic. My goal is to master 10 languages, in addition to Chinese and English, by the time I'm 30.

I want to do this because I believe that language is the bridge to understanding. Take China and Tibet. If more Chinese learned the Tibetan language, and if Tibetans learned more about China, I'm convinced that our two peoples would understand one another better and we could overcome the current crisis between us peacefully. I feel that even more strongly after what happened here at Duke University a little more than a week ago.
Trying to mediate between Chinese and pro-Tibetan campus protesters, I was caught in the middle and vilified and threatened by the Chinese. After the protest, the intimidation continued online, and I began receiving threatening phone calls. Then it got worse -- my parents in China were also threatened and forced to go into hiding. And I became persona non grata in my native country.
It has been a frightening and unsettling experience. But I'm determined to speak out, even in the face of threats and abuse. If I stay silent, then the same thing will happen to someone else someday.
    So here's my story.
When I first arrived at Duke last August, I was afraid I wouldn't like it. It's in the small town of Durham, N.C., and I'm from Qingdao, a city of 4.3 million. But I eventually adjusted, and now I really love it. It's a diverse environment, with people from all over the world. Over Christmas break, all the American students went home, but that's too expensive for students from China. Since the dorms and the dining halls were closed, I was housed off-campus with four Tibetan classmates for more than three weeks.
I had never really met or talked to a Tibetan before, even though we're from the same country. Every day we cooked together, ate together, played chess and cards. And of course, we talked about our different experiences growing up on opposite sides of the People's Republic of China. It was eye-opening for me.
I'd long been interested in Tibet and had a romantic vision of the Land of Snows, but I'd never been there. Now I learned that the Tibetans have a different way of seeing the world. My classmates were Buddhist and had a strong faith, which inspired me to reflect on my own views about the meaning of life. I had been a materialist, as all Chinese are taught to be, but now I could see that there's something more, that there's a spiritual side to life.
We talked a lot in those three weeks, and of course we spoke in Chinese. The Tibetan language isn't the language of instruction in the better secondary schools there and is in danger of disappearing. Tibetans must be educated in Mandarin Chinese to succeed in our extremely capitalistic culture. This made me sad, and made me want to learn their language as they had learned mine.
I was reminded of all this on the evening of April 9. As I left the cafeteria planning to head to the library to study, I saw people holding Tibetan and Chinese flags facing each other in the middle of the quad. I hadn't heard anything about a protest, so I was curious and went to have a look. I knew people in both groups, and I went back and forth between them, asking their views. It seemed silly to me that they were standing apart, not talking to each other. I know that this is often due to a language barrier, as many Chinese here are scientists and engineers and aren't confident of their English.
I thought I'd try to get the two groups together and initiate some dialogue, try to get everybody thinking from a broader perspective. That's what Lao Tzu, Sun Tzu and Confucius remind us to do. And I'd learned from my dad early on that disagreement is nothing to be afraid of. Unfortunately, there's a strong Chinese view nowadays that critical thinking and dissidence create problems, so everyone should just keep quiet and maintain harmony.
A lot has been made of the fact that I wrote the words "Free Tibet" on the back of the American organizer of the protest, who was someone I knew. But I did this at his request, and only after making him promise that he would talk to the Chinese group. I never dreamed how the Chinese would seize on this innocent action. The leaders of the two groups did at one point try to communicate, but the attempt wasn't very successful.
The Chinese protesters thought that, being Chinese, I should be on their side. The participants on the Tibet side were mostly Americans, who really don't have a good understanding of how complex the situation is. Truthfully, both sides were being quite closed-minded and refusing to consider the other's perspective. I thought I could help try to turn a shouting match into an exchange of ideas. So I stood in the middle and urged both sides to come together in peace and mutual respect. I believe that they have a lot in common and many more similarities than differences.

But the Chinese protesters -- who were much more numerous, maybe 100 or more -- got increasingly emotional and vocal and wouldn't let the other side speak. They pushed the small Tibetan group of just a dozen or so up against the Duke Chapel doors, yelling "Liars, liars, liars!" This upset me. It was so aggressive, and all Chinese know the moral injunction: Junzi dongkou, bu dongshou (The wise person uses histongue, not his fists).

I was scared. But I believed that I had to try to promote mutual understanding. I went back and forth between the two groups, mostly talking to the Chinese in our language. I kept urging everyone to calm
down, but it only seemed to make them angrier. Some young men in the Chinese group -- those we call fen qing (angry youth) -- started yelling and cursing at me.

What a lot of people don't know is that there were many on the Chinese side who supported me and were saying, "Let her talk." But they were drowned out by the loud minority who had really lost their cool.

Some people on the Chinese side started to insult me for speaking English and told me to speak Chinese only. But the Americans didn't understand Chinese. It's strange to me that some Chinese seem to feel
as though not speaking English is expressing a kind of national pride. But language is a tool, a way of thinking and communicating.

At the height of the protest, a group of Chinese men surrounded me, pointed at me and, referring to the young woman who led the 1989 student democracy protests in Tiananmen Square, said, "Remember Chai Ling? All Chinese want to burn her in oil, and you look like her." They said that I had mental problems and that I would go to hell. They asked me where I was from and what school I had
attended. I told them. I had nothing to hide. But then it started to feel as though an angry mob was about to attack me. Finally, I left the protest with a police escort.

Back in my dorm room, I logged onto the Duke Chinese Students and Scholars Association (DCSSA) Web site and listserv to see what people were saying. Qian Fangzhou, an officer of DCSSA, was gloating, "We really showed them our colors!"

I posted a letter in response, explaining that I don't support Tibetan independence, as some accused me of, but that I do support Tibetan freedom, as well as Chinese freedom. All people should be free
and have their basic rights protected, just as the Chinese constitution says. I hoped that the letter would spark some substantive discussion. But people just criticized and ridiculed me more.

The next morning, a storm was raging online. Photographs of me had been posted on the Internet with the words "Traitor to her country!" printed across my forehead. Then I saw something really alarming: Both
my parents' citizen ID numbers had been posted. I was shocked, because this information could only have come from the Chinese police.

I saw detailed directions to my parents' home in China, accompanied by calls for people to go there and teach "this shameless dog" a lesson. It was then that I realized how serious this had become. My
phone rang with callers making threats against my life. It was ironic: What I had tried so hard to prevent was precisely what had come to pass. And I was the target.

I talked to my mom the next morning, and she said that she and my dad were going into hiding because they were getting death threats, too. She told me that I shouldn't call them. Since then, short e-mail
messages have been our only communication. The other day, I saw photos of our apartment online; a bucket of feces had been emptied on the doorstep. More recently I've heard that the windows have been smashed
and obscene posters have been hung on the door. Also, I've been told
that after convening an assembly to condemn me, my high school revoked my diploma and has reinforced patriotic education.

I understand why people are so emotional and angry; the events in Tibet have been tragic. But this crucifying of me is unacceptable. I believe that individual Chinese know this. It's when they fire each
other up and act like a mob that things get so dangerous.

Now, Duke is providing me with police protection, and the attacks inChinese cyberspace continue. But contrary to my detractors'expectations, I haven't shriveled up and slunk away. Instead, I've responded by publicizing this shameful incident, both to protect my parents and to get people to reflect on their behavior. I'm no longer afraid, and I'm determined to exercise my right to free speech.

Because language is the bridge to understanding.

  • gossip about relationship

I was surprised to get an invitation to a party hosted by an indian guy. Actually we have some contact because his girlfriend and I are from one university in China. I don't know why and how she found an indian guy as her boyfriend finally.

It was Thursday( 4,11) and it was also raining heavily. I was wondering why they gave a party on workingday night. I got the answer that it is the birthday party for Rubby, the indian guy at their apartment. It's a great party and I also met some friends there that I did not contact so often.

We had a relaxed chat and ate some different kinds of food and birthday cake. The girls there were talking about some other's personal affairs. For example, one of my friend fell in love with a girl because he ever said something about her. It's weird. They also speak of me and one girl. I did not admit that I had some crush on that girl. I think it is meaningless to talk about my personal stuff with them. They just dispersed some bad news to other people. I don't care about whatever they say. I only live for myself.

  • Tibet was, is and will be the part of China

Recenty almost all the international media paid more attention to the riot present in Tibet, China. I watched some related pictures and video from western media such as CNN, BBC. Most of them were taken in other countries about the similar riot. I am angry at their arbitory judgment. I think they should think about it before they deliver them in the public. Or else they will dislead their people and leave their bad impression on Chinese government.

I am a Chinese and love my homeland just as most Amercian love their own country. I just hope the western media give a fair and true report on Tibet issue. According to some videos taken in Tibet, I found some people were crazy. For example, they attacked the passing military trucks with bottles or something else, beat some riding people and burned others' cars and so on. I can't believe that they truly happened in China. What's wrong with these crazy people? Chinese government think a series of riot is supported by Dalai Lama and some western anti-chinese organizations. Why do they have to do these destructive events?

Besides, It happened right before Beijing will host the summer 2008 Olympic Games and Taiwan presdiental election. Do they have any interaction among them? I am confused with them. I hope those bad people can stop their crazy behivor as soon as possible.

    I support China.

Below is a popular poem in Chineses mailing list and I want to share with everyone.

For the Tibetans and Hans alike.
    TV And Gun
    The Ruins

I knew it from the beginning,
    I knew they are coming,
    Right down the Potala Palace,
    Along the stone streets,
    Marched down the soldiers,
    with live ammunition.

    The soldiers hold tight,
The machine guns in their hands,
    Side by side,
    comes the camera man,
He owns all the TV screens,
    on the whole land.

    My heart is sinking,
    I knew it's coming,
    They got everything ready,
    They are gonna kill,
    They are gonna lie.

    It's never their first time,
In Beijing they did just alike,
    In a young summer night,
    machine guns cut down,
    so many innocent young men.
Right next day on all the TV sreens,
they said all rioters deserved to die.

    Now the people in Beijing,
Sitting in front of their TV,
No facing guns like they did last time.
They said, how dare those Tibetan,
Attack our people the great Han.

    My fellow country men,
    What a shame,
    you forgot just yesterday,
    to your brothers and sisters,
    they just did the same.

I knew it, I see it coming
    The soldiers hold machine guns,
Ready to fire in their hand,
    The camera man has,
    the story script already,
    well written in his mind.
    They are gonna kill,
    They are gonna lie,
    Like they had always done,
    In a thousand moonless night.

  • rocky night

Wiitala brothers, have you heard about them? did you know what they do? Guess what?

They are a rocky band. Maybe they are not so popular that you did not heard about them. However, I was lucky to watch their awesome live rocky show at the Breslin center with Paul on March 31. It was a rainy day and only some students showed up then. It shows the center is a little bit empty. but it did not affect the performance of the band. A guy was singing loudly with the music played by his team and all kinds of lights shining. They are not long songs which still made them feel tired. I can imagine that. I think they gave us about 20 songs at night. Although I can not understand most of the songs' meaning, I also felt excited that I waved my hands and gave them my warm claps. Meanwhile, my heart was beating fast and It seemed that I was going to be deaf because of inspired and loud songs.

At the end of the concert, I went to the middle of the scene. There I found a tall hot and pretty girl dancing to the music. I only concentrate on her for a little while because of her behivor. People started to move out the chairs to give enough room to dance to music and they were crazy about the performance.

I will memorize the crazy night that I spent at MSU.

Below is a little knowledge about Rock music cited from Wikipedia.

Rock music is a form of popular music with a prominent vocal melody, accompanied by guitar, drums, and bass. Many styles of rock music also use keyboard instruments such as organ, piano, mellotron, and synthesizers. Other instruments sometimes utilized in rock include harmonica, violin, flute, banjo, melodica, and timpani. Also, less common stringed instruments such as mandolin and sitar are used. Rock music usually has a strong back beat, and often revolves around the guitar, either solid electric, hollow electric, or acoustic.

Rock music has its roots in 1940s and 1950s rock and roll and rockabilly, which evolved from blues, country music and other influences. According to the All Music Guide, "In its purest form, Rock & Roll has three chords, a strong, insistent back beat, and a catchy melody. Early rock & roll drew from a variety of sources, primarily blues, R&B, and country, but also gospel, traditional pop, jazz, and folk. All of these influences combined in a simple, blues-based song structure that was fast, danceable, and catchy.

In the late 1960s, rock music was blended with folk music to create folk rock, blues to create blues-rock and with jazz, to create jazz-rock fusion, and without a time signature to create psychedelic rock. In the 1970s, rock incorporated influences from soul, funk, and latin music. Also in the 1970s, rock developed a number of subgenres, such as soft rock, heavy metal, hard rock, progressive rock, and punk rock. Rock subgenres that emerged in the 1980s included synth-rock, hardcore punk and alternative rock. In the 1990s, rock subgenres included grunge, Britpop, indie rock, and nu metal.

A group of musicians specializing in rock music is called a rock band or rock group. Many rock groups consist of a guitarist, lead singer, bass guitarist, and drummer, forming a quartet. Some groups omit one or more of these roles and/or utilize a lead singer who plays an instrument while singing, forming a trio or duo; others include additional musicians such as one or two rhythm guitarists and/or a keyboardist. More rarely, groups also utilize stringed instruments such as violins or cellos, and/or horns like trumpets or trombones.

  • endless noises

I don't know what our neighbour do. They usually got home very late at night and then made a lot of noises such as TV high-volume sound, loud talking or singing the songs. It sucks. I can't stand their behavior. I can not concentrate on sleeping at night although I have classes or experiment plan at the early morning. I did not know when I fell asleep. Bad sleeping made me late for my meeting with my advisor at 8:30 am on Thursday and learning technique at 8:00 am on Friday. Fortunatelly, I did not feel uncomfortable when talking with someone else.

As for the noises, I don't know what I should do. Can I complain to some related housing service or something office else. I don't have any clue. It makes me hate the black girls. They are fat and have thick lips and wear the unmatched clothes.

Now I just hope I can move out of here as soon as possible. I will do it at the weekend after the mid-test on 3, 31,2008. Besides, I can escape my curent dirty, shitful and lazy roomie. I don't want to talk with him. Go to hell.

  • the first experience to extract DNA from Funga mycelia

I learned how to extract DNA from Fungal mycelia last Friday. It took me almost the whole day to finish the first fifteen steps. It is a long time to get what I want. Now I just hope that I will extract DNA as what I expect. Next week I will get the answer to it. I don't want to fail at the first time. However, I also met with many difficulties. I don't exactly know where the chemical solvents are, how to use some instrumental, and lack of certain equipment. Anyway, I made it finally.

I did something wrong in the middle of it. I did not add the toxic solvent in the right place. so I smelt some odor and did not feel well. It is my fault because I did not ask someone esle in my lab. It should be avoided. History will not repeat. Besides, I am not sure whether I stored the right extraction layer ultimately. It is the key to the success.

I will the final result although I have to spent another long time.
