the first experience to test drive
leave for Ohio
Today I will go to Ohio soon. It is so exciting because it is my second long-distance trip in US. Although it is work day today, I decided to skip it and enjoy the spring weekend with my friends. Now i have finished packing and are waiting for a ride. It is awesome. I will meet a lot of Chinese at the Ohio. Did you think it is a low odd to make it?
The goal to Ohio is to study Bible there. However, my interest of travel is beyond learning Bible. Besides, we will have a lot fun there such as hiking, canoing, camping. I am expecting it.
I will write detailed events there in Ohio when I come back on next Monday.
Below is the tip from my friend, Justin.
A FEW THINGS TO KNOW:
* Friday night dinner is not provided, so we will stop and eat on the way there. All other meals are provided at the conference.
*If you need to pay for anything at the camp, unfortunately, you cannot use credit cards. Therefore, if you need to by anything you will have to use cash or check.
WHAT TO BRING:
* Bedding: The camp only supplies bare mattresses, so please bring a sleeping bag or other bedding (sheets, blanket) and a pillow. Married couples should pack separately unless you've heard from Jeannie Tabb that you'll be in special family housing.
* The balance of the money you owe for the conference. You can pay by cash or check (payable to Bridges International). We regret that credit cards cannot be accepted at the camp.
* Towel (for showering)
* Soap, toothpaste, etc.
* Casual clothes (including sports shoes for volleyball, basketball, etc.)
* Bible, pen, notebook
* Sunscreen, insect repellant
OPTIONAL
* Flashlight (This is especially helpful for the men and some of the women, since the men's bathroom is separate from their sleeping area. This is also true for some of the women.)
* Extra money for purchasing Christian books, if you like.
EMERGENCY PHONE
Jeannie Tabb (832-722-9689). If someone needs to reach you at the camp, in case of an emergency, the telephone number is 937-468-2519. Please use this for emergencies only. Thanks. -
the video of MSU spring
I finally finished my task that I need to make a video using the pictures I took and send it to a girl in China now I am seeing. I think it is well done. Because I picked the pictures which are all best in my album and the music from Banderi. I should have given it to her last weekend. Unfortunately, the video is too large to send it to her. Today, I have to make it again due to my fault that I did not save it in my computer. Anyway, It is not so hard to put them together. I changed the music I used last time. It is more suitable for the video.
Spring is beautiful and green across the campus but short here. I tried to use the pictures to record it and slow down its step. However, MSU is so big a campus that I can't take a shot for all the place. To tell you the truth, I also did not take the chance to tour abround all the campus. Some places are still new and strange for me. It is a shame. After all, I have stayed here almost one year till August.
By the way, I signed up for the orientation as a volunteer in August. Maybe it is a good chance to lead some new students to enjoy the beatuiful and new scenes on Campus. Now I am looking forward to it. -
Tour abround Lansing
On Thursday I went shopping instead of going to the lab as usual. In the early morning I signed my new lease of my apartment and got my new keys. I was very happy to make a transfer because I am satified with my quiet, clean apartment and my roomie. Then I spend several hours to move all my stuff and organize it repeatly with the help of my friends the next two days. I appreciate it.
Let's get down to the business and talk about my tour. Honestly it is my first time to take a bus to Lansing since I came to US. I felt sorry about that because it is very easy and close to get there. However, I did not take my chance to do it. Anyway, I made it at last. The intend is to buy some stuff and let Ge Gao bring back to my family in China. It indeed took a while to get the destination, the east wood. It is a big and open-air shopping site. However, there are so few people shopping there. Maybe it is just the reason of work days. We looked around several stores and found the goods there were so expensive that i did not buy anything.
Soon then another guy showed up and led us to Sam's club because of his membership. I have heard a little about it before. Most merchandise sold at Sam's Club is sold in bulk. but they were relatively cheap. I purchased some mixed nuts and a bottle of fish oil for my parents following his suggestion. I also found some cheap brand jeans like Levis and Calvin Klein below 10 dollors. Oh my God. I can't believe it. After trying on them, I decided to get one of each them.
I love Sam's Club. I will be there again sometime. -
an interesting analysis about how to marry the rich
This article does not "love the genetic science," the biological basis, not as "Reflections on Love and Marriage" warm and moving, nor "矮个men came to be the perfect choice," the novel argument, but it equally deserving for this you spend five minutes. We know that the world gathered in the local beauty, but also the accumulation of the rich, of course, is also the source of prosperity, however you may find that many of the rich wives, mostly not sex, and how to explain this? One explanation heard most often is: God is fair, beauty born gathered all the way scenery, often overlooked acquired efforts, while relatively modest person inherent advantage in turn due to the lack of efforts to find a remedy, and the use of geographical and Regal love PK war eventually won. The question is: why did he choose the relatively wealthy is not superior people for his wife? Another question is: How can marry her wealthy? -- Psytopic.com
Beauty: How can I marry the rich?
A young and beautiful American girl in the United States, a large online forum delivered a financial version of a written note about the problem: How can I marry the rich?
"I would like to say the following are the truth. Himself 25 years old, very pretty, is the kind of nice people and colorful, conversation elegant and good taste, would like to marry an annual salary 500,000 US dollars people. You may say that I am greedy but in New York, the annual salary 1000000 to be a middle class, I actually do not request high.
This version has no annual salary of more than 500,000 people? You married? I would like to ask you a question - how to marry you to the rich? I have people around, the richest annual salary of 250,000, it seems to be my limit. Admitted to the New York Central Park west of luxury residential, the annual salary of 250,000 is far from enough. I sincerely ask for the. There are several specific issues: First, the wealthy bachelor generally spend time where? (Please list of bars, restaurants, the gym's name and full address.) Second, I should have set the target at which age? Third, why is it that it looks rich wife mediocre? I have seen some girls, looks like water, there is no attractive places, but they managed to marry Homer. Single bars, and those迷死the beauty but poor luck. Fourth, determine who you how the wife, who can only do a girlfriend? (I now aim is married 。)"-- Powles President
Below is a Wall Street financier's replies:
"Dear Bowers: I read with great interest your note, I believe many of you, also have been working with similar questions. Allow me to the status of an investment expert, you do an analysis of the situation. Annual salary more than I 500,000, in line with your spouse, so please believe that I am not a waste of everyone's time.
From a businessman's point of view, with your marriage is a bad business decision-making, reasoning clear enough, please listen to me explain. Set aside marginal, in fact you have said is a simple "wealth", "Outlook" transactions: Party A person's appearance provided references, B million expense, fair trade,童叟无欺. However, here there is a fatal problem, your beauty will fade away, but my money is not for no reason at all reduced. In fact, my income is likely to increase year by year T. Year by year and you can not be beautiful.
Therefore, from the economics perspective, I value assets, the depreciation of assets you are not only devalued, but also accelerated depreciation! You are 25, in the next five years, you can still maintain窈窕the posture, the pretty appearance, Despite a slight decline each year. But the beauty of speed will increasingly vanish fast if it is your only asset, the value of ten years after you very worried.
With Wall Street terminology, each transaction has a positions, the contacts are with you "trading positions" (tradingl position), once the value fell to sell immediately, but not long-term holders - that is, you want the marriage. This sounds cruel, but it will accelerate a depreciation of the material, a wise choice is leasing, rather than buying. The annual salary to more than 500,000 people, of course, are not idiots, we will contact with you, but not with your marriage. Therefore, I advise you not to marry the rich hard to find the secret formula. Incidentally, you can think of ways inverted his annual salary of 500,000 of a person, than get a rich fool's chance of winning is bigger.
The replies that I can help you. If your "rent" interested, please contact with me. "- Bo Luo. Campbell (J P Morgan variety of investment advisers)
Why did he choose the relatively wealthy is not superior people for his wife?
Psytopic: from upstairs Morgan investment advisers answer, so it seems that we can explain: her very easily because depreciation, and ugly even if the appreciation is not easy, but also very slow depreciation, as the rich, of course, will make a wise investment. In other words, the marriage can not simply from the "wealth", "Outlook" transactions to analyze, and when we raise this issue, has made this assumption, of course, will fall into confusion. As such marriages what types of transactions, the transaction is not, the issue of money left to the reader.

Major changes to F-1 OPT rules from OISS of MSU
It seems a good news for most international students that can stay US longer for a job. Below is the detailed information from OISS.
Last Friday April 4, 2008 Department of Homeland Security (DHS) released
preliminary changes to F-1 Optional Practical training (OPT) rules. The new
rules will affect all F-1 students currently on OPT and all future OPT
applicants. Some students will become eligible to extend their OPT from 12
months to 29 months (17-month extension). The new rules also involve stricter
reporting requirements for all students on OPT.
**OISS will host an open Town Hall meeting to discuss the new OPT rules. Please
see details at the end of this message.**
17-Month OPT Extensions:
Applications for OPT extensions cannot be submitted at this time, as
application procedures have not yet been finalized. There are two main criteria
which limit the number of students who will be eligible for OPT extensions
under the new rules:
1. STEM: Only students in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics
(STEM) fields will be eligible to apply for this extension. STEM fields are
defined as follows:
* Actuarial Science
* Computer Science
* Engineering
* Biological and Biomedical Sciences
* Mathematics & Statistics
* Military technologies
* Physical Sciences
* Science Technologies
* Medical Scientists
2. E-Verify: Only students working for employers who are enrolled in the
E-Verify program will be eligible to apply. E-Verify is a free internet-based
system operated by United States Immigration and Citizenship Services (USCIS)
in partnership with the Social Security Administration, which determines new
employee's eligibility to work. (like an electronic I-9 form)
H-1B Cap Gap:
An F-1 student on OPT whose employer has filed a timely application for an H-1B
on the student's behalf will be able to stay in the U.S. and continue working
between the OPT expiration date and the H-1B start date. This would apply to
all students on OPT and not just those in STEM fields who are eligible for an
extension.
Limited Periods of Unemployment to Maintain Status:
According to the new regulations during post-completion OPT, F-1 status is
dependent upon employment. Students may not accrue an aggregate of more than 90
days of unemployment during any post-completion OPT. Students granted a
17-month OPT extension may not accrue an aggregate of more than 120 days of
unemployment during the total 29-month OPT period.
Reporting Requirements while on OPT:
All students on OPT are required to report to the DSO:
* any change of name or address, or
* any interruption of employment.
In addition, students with an approved 17-month OPT extension must report to
the student's Designated School Official (DSO) within 10 days of any change of:
* legal name
* residential or mailing address
* employer name
* employer address, and/or
* loss of employment.
Students with an approved extension must also make a validation report to the
DSO every six months starting from the date the extension begins and ending
when the student's F-1 status ends, the student changes educational levels at
the same school, the student transfers to another school, or the 17-month OPT
extension ends, whichever is first. The validation is a confirmation that the
student's name and address, employer name and address, and/or loss of
employment is current and accurate. The report is due to the DSO within 10
business days of each reporting date. -
Free food from MSU food bank
It is my third time to get the free food every othere Tuesday this spring semester. Actually I have heard about it last semester. However, I did not find the right place at the right time.
About more than one month ago, I was led by Lina, a colleague in the lab, to the Olin health center for the free food. Before I entered the building, I saw many students carried several green heavy bags out of it. Someone drove the car to get the food. In fact the food was designed for the poor students. Why did they do that? As soon as I finished the registration, I was asked by a volunteer for every kind of food. I was not sure what they are and rarely tasted them ever when she mentioned them on display. I just based on my likeness and picked up some food. It provided a good chance to have so many kinds of American food and eat them later. I always bought some vegetable and meat and cooked them in Chinese style. It changed me a lot.
I don't think I like them because most of the food was too sweet or the flavor did not fit me. I just cook them at the weekend based on their convenience and availability.
There are only two remaining chances to get free food this semester. I will take the opportunity to obtain them. Thanks for the hard-working staff and sponsor at the MSU. -
Project proceeding
This Thursday(3, 20,08) I finally had the chance to talk with my advisor. It is just one-hour talking. It didn't seem like what I thought. I have a Ph.D. student. It should be a very long meeting because It is just the first meeting I had since I came to the lab. It is so simple that I can not believe it's true. During the meeting, she asked a technician and Ph.D. studnet joined us. We are a team and all work on ginseng. I quite enjoy the teamwork in our lab. Indeed I learned a lot from them and instruct me to do some experiments.
Although meeting is over, the literature review is waiting for me. I have to finish it before July 1st and then will have my first committee meeting. It is very important to me. It deserve my effort to work on it.
In all, it is a busy week. I learned a lot of technique and speaked much English. It is helpful to me. After all, I will have an undergraduate student work for me. I will have to teach her to do something and share my work load. It is challange to hire her. I will try. -
A letter from university housing
University Apartment Residents:
University Housing is implementing a plan to remove Spartan Village Zone 1
buildings in the summer of 2008. Zone 1 consists of the green sided
buildings in Spartan Village; buildings 1401, 1402, 1403, 1404, 1410, 1411,
1412, 1413, 1414, 1420, 1421, 1422, 1423, 1424, 1425, 1426, 1512, 1513, 1514,
1515, 1516, 1517, 1518, 1519, 1520, 1526, 1527, 1528, 1529, 1530, 1531, 1532,
1533, and 1534. These buildings were built in 1957/1958 and have provided a
home to many MSU students and families. While the decision to take them off
line was not an easy one, they are being removed because they are at the end of
their useful life cycle.
Preparations for this project are well under way and tenants have been
transferring to their apartments outside of Zone 1 in anticipation of our busy
construction summer in Spartan Village. We have pointed out in our numerous
communications on this topic that the summer will pose some inconvenience to
residents due to the construction noise, dust, traffic etc. involved with this
project.
As part of our continuing communication plan to residents, we would like to
notify you of a tenant forum to discuss the Zone 1 removal plan from 5 p.m. to
7 p.m. on Monday, January 28, 2008, in conference room 105 in the Spartan
Village Community Center. The meeting will be an open house format, so please
stop by at your convenience during the 5 to 7 p.m. period. Tenants can ask
questions about the project and see diagrams of the construction/demolition
plan.
I look forward to seeing you at the meeting. As always, you may contact me
with questions regarding this, or other topics at Koivist4@MAIL.HFS.MSU.EDU. -
decision to move out
It gets warmer and the snow has disappear now. It means we will more chance to go outside to breath fresh air and hiking. However, the noise around my apartment occurs again because it is very close to the highway and train track. It sucks. I need a quiet environment to have a sleep with summer coming. so I am looking for another apartment in the Spartan Village. Fortunatelly, I found one which seems to have a better location and roomie. I went there last night and had a long talk with him and his current roomie who will transfer to UC-Davis for his advanced study. I think it leaves a good impression on me like clean living room, quiet surrounding, close to laundry and community center. I got much useful information from them and I found that it is such a small world that we have many friends in common although I did not know these two guys.I like it and decide to move out at the beginning of April although I will be charged $75 for moving out ahead of time. I can't stand the noise and my roomie.
The current problem is that I have to tell my current roomie about my moving. I don't do any harm to him in spite of moving in advance. He will not be charged for the whole apartment rent. Anyway, I have do my best to him and the current apartment.
I need to begin a totally new life. It is awsome.
