With the presentation approaching, I am busy with practicing it. I wrote down every sentences I will say to help me memorize them. It is a huge thing I need face. Go fight it.
Slide 1: Good afternoon, everyone. Thank all of you for coming to my presentation. I will talk about a part of my research today. The title is …..
Slide 2: First I want introduce a little bit of American ginseng about its botanical characteristics, medical use, distribution, cultivation and prevalent soil-borne disease. American ginseng is a perennial herb native to the deciduous forests of the eastern US. To meet the demand of consumption of ginseng roots, People have cultivated them in wild-simulated, woods, and field condition with a large scale expect harvest of wild ginseng. Field grown ginseng is the most common and normally require at least 3 years to mature with approximately 70-80% shade. This figure (1/3 size) shows the four-year old plant which forms one compound leaf with 5 whorled leaflets per year and cluster berry on mature plants. The taproot can reach about 8-20 cm long.
Slide 3: American ginseng was one of the earliest marketable and profitable herbs used in pharmacy. It has been reported to improve heart……Therefore, its products including…..are consumed to maintain good health which, in turn, prevents disease from occuring.
Slide 4: Due to its growing popularity and extensive application, the distribution of American ginseng has extended from southern Canada to …… This figure shows the wide distribution of American ginseng in US.
Slide 5: Based on the survey of Ginseng board of Wisconsin in 2008, Wisconsin produced approximately 95% of the total 1400 acre in the US accounting for 10% of the world’s supply of ginseng root. This is largely due to its unique soil and growing conditions and over 100-year-cultivation history and accumulated skills.
Slide 6: This picture showed the ginseng seedlings growing on raised beds covered with a thick layer of straw under the shade cloth in Wausau, Wisconsin.
Slide 7: Because the production environment and prolonged period of growth which is conducive to the survival and infection of both foliar and soil-borne fungi, various diseases are very prevalent in the cultivated ginseng gardens. For example, thick straw which provide protection and moisture for the ginseng also offer the habitat and growth condition for the pathogens.
Slide 8: Here I listed common foliar pathogens such as Alternaira panax, Botrytis cinerea and soilborne pathogens such as pythium species,…..and their typical disease symptom. I will talk about some important soilborne pathogens and diseases because they directly affect the root quality and yield.
Slide 9: Fusarium species are the most frequently isolated fungi from affected root tissues, especially for F. solani, oxysporium, and proliferatum.
Slide 10: They can cause seed discoloration and decay shown in the left picture and seedlings damping-off and produce superficial reddish brown to orange-brown lesions near the crown of ginseng roots pointed in the right picture.
Slide 11: Rusted root disease symptom was first described by hildebrand in the 1930s. However its causal agent, Rhexocercosporidium panacis, was determined till 2005 by Canadian researcher Releeder.
Slide 12: It result in the severe superficial rusted symptom with scabbed and deformed appearance as shown in picture C.
Slide 13: Different from the superficial disease symptoms on the ginseng roots caused by R. panacis, Cylindrocarpon destrucants and phytophthora cactorum can penetrate deeper into the cortex of the root and in many cases destroy the entire root. So let’s take a look at these two pathogens and their severity. C. destructans, the major cause of …… It can enter the seed during bloom, stratification or after planting and produce ….. .Normally it can lead to 25-30% losses although they are not apparent until harvest completes.
Slide 14: C. destructans is a slow-growing fungus, produce a dark brown colony (with 10-12 mm diameter) on PDA after 1 week. As I said before, it can produce 1-3 septate cylindrical macroconidial, 1-sepate hyaline microconidial on long conidiophores and brown globose chlamydospores single or in chain.
Slide 15: As for the root rot symptom, it appears first at the tip of the taproot, spread gradually and at last destroy all root as indicated in the upper left picture. For medium virulent stains, it usually affects the outer root layers first and forms round or irregular and blackish-brown lesions shown in the bottom two pictures. the core of the root eventually disintegrates, often leaving the hollow remains of the root in the soil, known as disappearing root rot. Meanwhile, the aboveground leaves change gradually from green to reddish-brown and die as indicated in the upper right picutre.
Slide 16: In recent 10 years, researchers paid more attention to it.Canadian plant pathologists Rahman and punja isolated ….. Their research indicated that…. .
Slide 17: Dr Hausbeck tested fungicides against cylindrocarpon root rot in Michigan and found that boscalid, thiophanate-methyl and fludioxonil had good efficacy against this disease. Zeizold evaluated the toxicity…. The result showed that benomyl and thiram and propiconazole were effective against
Slide 18: Since Cylindrocarpon root rot has become a disease concern among Wisconsin growers, its management starts with using clean or treated seeds to prevent its introduction to a new garden. Don’t plant the ginsengs on sites previously cultivated and keep good cultural practices such as….. Besides,The application of fungicides is still the most effective way to control it. Right now thiophanate-methyl, captan and pyraclostrobin have been registered for Cylindrocarpon root rot.
Slide 19: P. cactorum, a homothallic oomycete, is one of the….. It can cause severe foliar or stem blight and root rot and produce sporangia, zoospores, chlamydospores and oospores.
Slide 20: The colony appearance is shown on V8 media in the top picture. The bottom two are the sporangia and oospores it formed on V8 media.
Slide 21: The upper left picture shows the typical dark green, water-soaked foliar symptom. It can progress rapidly down the main stem, resulting in wilting and yellowing of the leaflets, even plant collapse and death. If we dig the root out, discolored roots with spongy texture have been formed like the bottom picture.
Slide 22: If not controlled, this pathogen may destroy an entire ginseng garden in just a few weeks. Therefore, during the practical ginseng production, clean or treated seeds, no replant and good cultural practices such as … and so on have been adopted to integrate chemical control. Historically, ginseng growers relied on the frequent use of the systemic fungicide Mefenoxam. Recently isolates of P. cactorum recovered from ginseng were found to be resistant to mefenoxam. So other fungicides including Aluminum tris, copper hydroxide and phosphorous acid were registered to offer a moderate level (60 to 74%) of control against Phytophthora root rot. The screen of alternative fungicide effective in limiting P. cactorum are also needed to ensure high yields and root quality.
Slide 23: Little related research has been reported about its incidence and prevalence and limited number of fungicides registered for control of C root rot in US. Besides, it appears that C. destructans can be disseminated via ginseng seeds, providing a profound disease threat to the American ginseng industry. So my research will involve four objectives.
Slide 24: Here I will focus on greenhouse fungicide trial done in 2008 to screen effective fungicides and combinations against Cylidnrocropan root rot and Phytophthora root rot.
Slide 25: Next I will talk about the method I used for ginseng seedling cultivation and greenhouse inoculation and evaluation of fungicides.At first, Germinated seeds were selected from stratified seed lots and planted into flats containing sterilized silica sand. Following emergence, seedlings were carefully removed from the sand and observed for disease symptoms. Any seedlings showing root discoloration and stunt were discarded like the one I highlighted.
Slide 26: Then dip healthy …and transplant…, The next day apply fungicides…, Rate disease severity on a 1 to 5 scale and plant death when it shows up. Last analyze data using SAS.
Slide 27: This table list the fungicides applied against Cylindrocarpon root rot in the trial. The highlighted ones are registered. As we can see, most of fungicides have high resistance risk because of their single site of action.
Slide 28: This picture showed most seedlings were dead without any treatment after inoculation with Cylindrocarpon destructans. I rated them 5 except one in the upper left corner with 4. It meaned disease pressure was very high.
Slide 29: After treating with Quadris (Azoxystrobin), no seedlings showed any disease sysptom compared to the untreated control.
Slide 30: The statistical result indicated that currently registered fungicides including captan, azoxystrobin, and thiophanate-methyl (Topsin) and unregistered including fludioxonil (Cannonball) were significantly more effective against Cylindrocarpon root rot and protect seedlings from death when compared to other treatments and untreated control.
Slide 31: Well, as shown before, thiophanate-methyl and azoxystrobin had high resistance risk and were actually reported to have resistance against many other pathogens by FRAC, So I combined thiophanate-methyl and azoxystrobin with low risk and different mode of action fungicides, captan (low risk), and fludioxonil (Cannonball, low to medium) by each two and formed 6 sets of fungicide combination to control C root rot considering avoiding the development of fungicide resistance.
Slide 32: The combinations of azoxystrobin plus either Fludioxonil, or thiophanate-methyl, or captan and the combination of thiophanate-methyl plus fludioxonil significantly decreased the disease severity and plant death. No significant difference exist among the individual and combined fungicides.
Slide 33：To sum it up,
Slide 34: As for the Phytophthora trials, I applied fungicides before inoculating zoospore suspension. Rate the disease severity with the same scale.
Slide 35: All the fungicides used to prevent Phytophthora root rot were listed here with their target site and code and resistance risk. The highlighted ones including phosphorous acid, mefenoxam, aluminum tris and copper hydroxide are registered for use. The other are non-registered fungicides.
Mefenoxam resistance to Phytophthora cactorum has been found because its sole use of mefenoxam by ginseng growers for a long time.
Slide 36: Untreated one showed severe disease symptom like yellowing, damping off and dying after inoculating P. cactorm.
Slide 37: No seedlings showed any disease symptom compared to the untreated control after treating with Quadris (Azoxystrobin).
Slide 38: Only fenamidone had the significant effect to reduce disease severity and plant death. Mancozeb and copper hydroxide significantly decreased disease severity rather than plant death.
Slide 39: Likewise, to slow the resistance risk and enhance the fungicide efficacy against P. root rot, I mixed each two of fenamidone (Reason), mancozeb (Dithane), mandipropamid (Revus), flupicolide (Presidio), captan (low) and registered phosphorous acid (Phostrol) and did two alternation set.
Slide 40: The result shows that most fungicide combination except the alternation between combination of captan and flupicolide, combination of phosphorous acid and mancozeb and combination of mandipropamid and copper hydroxide had the significant effect against phytophthora root rot.

Slide 42: So It is concluded that….
Slide 43: That’s pretty much for the fungicides trial I want to talk. Next I also want to briefly show you other preliminary study done already.
Slide 44: Besides morphology identification of C. destructans, RCR detection was applied to fast identify my isolates from diseased ginseng roots. As shown in this picture, this method is very specific and can easily distinguish C. destructans located in the lane 2 to 5 from Phytophthora cactorum in lane 6 and Fusarium spp in lane 7.
Slide 45: I used healthy ginseng root slice to test the virulence of my isolates. This is the demo how it looks like after inoculation with a mycelia plug on the 7th day. The upper left one is the control with no visible symptom, the other three root slices showed brown lesion around the plug. It works well.
Slice 46: I also tried observing the inoculated ginseng seed with Scanning electron Microscopy. The mycelia and clamydospore grew underneath the broken seed coat as indicated in the left picture. The right picture showed the close-up of mycelia and clamydospore.
Slide 47: At last, I want to acknowledge my advisor Dr. ## and my committee numbers, Dr #, Dr. #, and Dr. for their precious advice and idea on my project. 这周是春假，连续几天都在下雨，感- 挺压抑的。由于seminar迫在眉睫（3.23- ，之前还有一门考试，也就安心呆在- 校准备系里的seminar。看到自己的报- 内容，心中真是没有底气，有关试验- 展的片子，实打实的不超过5张，但- 思维发散趋势下，也充数到了59张。- 不管怎样，我还是会尽力展示自己的- 作。至于这门有关SEM的中考，自然比- 已过去的PLP 881容易多了，当然自己希望最后能拿- 4分。
有关APS会议的材料，暂时告一段落，- 关travel award的申请文书业已提交完成，后期的- poster制作看来只能等到忙过这一阵子- 开始了。今天早上收到了8月初往返APS- 的机票，好家伙，还挺贵，一个人超- 了450刀，一起订了5张。在金融风暴肆- 虐当下的美国，大多数人都会想着如- 节省开支，没想到我们这里依然照旧- 不管怎样，自己又有一次机会出去见- 识见识了。
自3.8凌晨起，我们从冬令时改到了夏- 时，时钟因此需往前拨一个小时，也- 是说当天实际只过了23个小时，每天- 午将近7点时窗外还是大亮，有点让- 不敢相信。 -

在日益发展的中国背后，浮华，虚荣- 拜金，媚外现象章显于世，尤以女性- 代表。放眼过去，不知什么时候中国- 成了外国男人的天堂？用脑子想一想- 这样做会有什么后果？一开始的甜蜜- 间大多数换回的是无尽的烦恼与忧愁- 。当你面对他们直接火辣的爱情表白- ，请三思而后行.......
如果你问一个老外，你为什么来中国- 他多半会回答说，因为喜欢中国悠久- 历史、灿烂的文化、壮丽的山河、高- 速的发展、巨大的变化。但是我告诉- ，除了极少数由政府、公司派驻，通- 拖家带口的老外之外，绝大部分与以- 下两个因素有关：第一，在家混得不- 么样或者根本混不下去；第二，找中- 女人。
约翰就是这样一个例子。前不久，我- 大街上碰到他，一个比他高半个头的- 国姑娘挽着他的手。他介绍说，他的- 中国女朋友在一家模特公司工作。实- 上，当时要不是约翰主动叫我，我还- 没认出他来，因为跟上次见到他时有- 天壤之别。
约翰是位美国人，42岁，身高1.67米。- 于大学没有毕业，在美国始终没有找- 正规工作。在非洲混了两年之后，听- 说许多美国人在中国的淘金故事就来- 了上海。刚到上海人生地不熟，只得- 江苏一个小城的学校做英文老师。
约翰不甘心，在江苏干了几个月又来- 上海找工作，住12块钱一天的小旅馆- 我就是那时和他认识的。那天，我去- 我一个外国朋友吃饭，见他们在一起- 聊天，以为她认识约翰，所以我也就- 他叫上了。后来才知道他们也不过萍- 相逢而已。
点菜的时候，约翰点了一个比较贵的- ，我的那个朋友用英文问，你点的那- 菜比较贵，你准备自己付钱吗？约翰- 立即像做错事的小孩赶忙要退掉。看- 他缩头缩脑的样子，我先用中文对我- 友说没关系，再用英文让他继续点。-
之后，由于工作关系，我到处跑，很- 就把约翰给忘了。这次见到他，他告- 我他在上海一所学校找到教英文的工- 作。我没有和约翰的女朋友说话，但- 我看得出她已经有瞧不起中国人的目- 。望着她的背影，我忍不住想，她一- 定不知道她的美国约翰当时靠别人混- 。
这也未免太像神像的故事，明明是人- 自己制造的，制造好之后自己再去拜- 。
我还在上海的公共汽车上，目睹了一- 典型的美国街头小混混，搂着一个中- 小姑娘，光天化日之下，将手从衣服- 底下伸过去摸她的胸部。而那位中国- 娘很显然十分想表达胸部被外国人摸- 的快感，可惜她的英语每次只能说最- 多两个单词。
一位出租司机告诉我，有一次在一条- 名的酒吧街接到一个黑人，双手各搂- 个中国女孩。他一开始以为从那种地- 方上来这样女人是做特殊职业的，没- 在意。直到后来他们让他把车开到一- 著名高校的女研究生宿舍前，这才大- 吃一惊。
据报道，北京某医院发现一名艾滋病- ，这位美国商人临死前承认，在北京- 短短几周里，他已与六位中国女性发- 生关系，调查发现，她们多为高层知- 分子。
在中国，生活着这样一个外国人群体- 他们在本国找不到工作，然后凭借外- 人的优势在中国轻松挣钱、酗酒、泡- 妞。就是这样，他们唯一的业余爱好- 是批评中国。
更有甚者，一些外交官利用职务之便- 意玩弄中国女性。有人甚至公开说，- 我的签字可以得到任何一中国女人。- ”
中国，你知道吗？你给了老外太多、- 多，多到老外反过来瞧不起你。多到- 外国人自己也看不惯，称他们为白色- 垃圾（White trash）。
我在这里也要正告那些老外不要太得- ，你得到只是中国女人的肉体，一具- 有灵魂的躯体。
最近网上盛传一则外国人在中国征婚- 笑话：一位47岁的老外在中国的婚介- 征婚，长时间无人问津。突然有一天- 来了大量的征婚信，令老外大吃一惊- 。后查明，是由于婚介所的工作人员- 粗心把他的年龄错写成了67。
一项涉外婚姻调查也证实了中国女人- 要不是为了爱而嫁给外国男人的。调- 发现，中国女人和外国新郎的结婚年- 龄平均相差10.5岁，其中有13%的夫妻是- 代人，整整差了20岁。据悉，在涉外- 姻中，创下纪录的是当时轰动一时的- 一对夫妻，两人相差54岁。结婚时，美- 国新郎已是一个82岁的老翁，而中国新- 娘仅28岁。
说来凑巧，我前不久在一份美国杂志- 看了一则笑话：一位八十多岁的老翁- 他怀孕的二十多岁的妻子到医院做检- 查。医生好心地提醒他是否有别的可- ，老翁一口拒绝地说，“不会，我这- 人一向能创造奇迹。上回我和我妻子- 以及她的一个男朋友一块去打猎，我- 用一把雨伞指着一头鹿，那头鹿就中- 身亡了。”
不知那位中国新娘是否不久也会传出- 孕的消息，好让大家真正欣赏一下人- 奇迹。
您也许得到些什么，但却失去最宝贵- 尊严。
毋庸讳言，成就那些丑陋的外国男人- 始作俑者正是中国女人。但是这些女- ，他们大多数没有出过国，脑子里充- 满了幻想。所以，今天我要利用这个- 会告诉她们真相。
如果您找到了真爱，我祝贺您并祝福- 。我个人认为，只要是真爱，将来无- 持续多久远或多短暂都值得去追求。-
尽管如此，我还是要警告您。首先，- 国女人大多追求一个稳定的婚姻，但- ，除极少数例外，西方发达国家的离- 婚率多在50%左右，而国际婚姻不稳定- 因素更多。

也许您是为了性？澳洲有一个施女士- 文说，“……我还有一位女朋友，在- 国已经算是极其开放，有着丰富性经- 验的女人，然而当她第一次同西方男- 做爱，仍然感受到一种极大的冲击。- 在电话里向我讲述此事，冲动得想立- 即下嫁给那位西人，倒是我挺冷静地- 她，做爱精彩的西方男人到处都是，- 个中起码有八个精彩，二个马马虎虎- ，中国男人是十个中二个马马虎虎，- 个很糟糕。”
施女士这个“二八说”一出笼，立即- 开了锅，引来众多中国男人反驳、辩- 。这个话题在当地的华文报纸上竟然- 持续了几个月，争论之热烈据说还惊- 了多家国际知名媒体。可见这是一个- 中国男人多么具杀伤力的话题。
施女士的“二八说”是自己的亲身经- ，还是综合众姐妹的感受，不得而知- 中国男人这方面到底行不行，我倒是- 做了个调查。
我调查的不是嫁给西方男人的中国女- ，相反我调查的是那些嫁给中国男人- 或者曾经有过中国男朋友的白人女性- 。我直言不讳地问了她们一个问题，- 国男人在床上的表现怎么样？她们也- 言不讳地回答说，很好，有人甚至评- 价为“完美”，还有人听到我这个问- ，第一反应是“你们中国男人对自己- 床上的表现没信心吗？”
该调查仍在继续，详细的研究结果随- 我将全部公开。
我还要告诉大家，最新的性学研究表- ，女人在床上的满足程度，主要不取- 于男人，而取决于女人自己。这项研- 究发现，女性性感受偏低，主要是由- 自己受到了种种精神的束缚所致。只- 女性能够摆脱这些束缚，她们会具有- 和男性相同的反应能力和强度的，甚- 生理要求会超过男性。根据这项研究- 施女士的朋友之所以第一次和西方男- 人做爱感受到冲击，主要是她面对西- 男人时，不自觉地摆脱了以前影响她- 那些精神束缚。
最新的研究还发现，男女对性刺激的- 应模式实际上是相似的。比如，以前- 直以为男性对视觉刺激敏感，女性对- 气氛、情调刺激敏感，这也被用来解- 为什么男人喜欢看***电影。但是，最- 英国科学家发现，***电影同样可以使- 女性性唤起，许多女性仅仅凭借电影- 视觉刺激就能达到高潮。
当然，这方面中国男人并非完全没有- 任。但是我可以告诉大家，中国男人- 问题主要不是生理性的，而是心理性- 的，中国男人最大的问题是什么？缺- 性技巧。西方男人八个精彩，背后支- 的是他们遍及城乡的婚姻、性咨询及- 治疗诊所，以及他们对性的开放态度- 一有问题立即寻找专业帮助。打一个- 恰当的比方，一个烧了一辈子菜的老- 太太厨艺远不及一个年轻的厨师，可- 专业的培训有多么重要。
呼唤一场消灭丑陋的外国男人的全民- 动
也许，有些读者看到这里已经开始谴- 那些中国女人了。且慢！我要问一句- 在制造丑陋的外国男人问题上，你、- 我们每一个人，难道一点责任没有吗-
那种为了钱而变相出卖自己的女人全- 界哪里都有，美国人称之为掘金者（G- old-digger），所不同的是，这样的女人- 世界上其他地方被人瞧不起，只有在- 中国还被人尊重、羡慕。这种笑贫不- 娼的社会风气难道也是她们形成的？
一位美国的女汉学家怀着对中国历史- 中国文化的无比热爱，携带丈夫来到- 中国。可是没过多久她就决定提前回- 国，“几乎每天都有很多中国女人围- 我丈夫转，有些人甚至当着我的面毫- 掩饰。为了保护我的婚姻，我觉得回- 美国是最好的选择。”女汉学家不解- 问道，“我在美国读到八十年代的中- 小说，里面充斥的情节还都是女人和- 自己的恋人不小心怀孕了都会投江自- 。”
我也不明白，同样是中国人，才过了- 短二十年，做人的差距咋就这么大呢-
我还要问，给老外、尤其是美国人超- 民待遇的也是她们吗？美国总统访华- 消息放在头条我可以理解，但是预告- 美国总统即将访华的消息难道也一定- 放在头条？别忘了，你越是把对方当- 事，对方越是可能不把你当回事。
我在这里斗胆地呼吁一场运动，阻止- 国女人围着外国男人转。
当然，我深知我个人的力量是微小的- 所以我要动员大家的一起行动起来：

tough mid-term exam
现在终于可以松口气了，想象中相当- 的考试不过如此。从开始到结束一直- 头奋笔疾书，把几天来昏天暗地所记- 知识点一股脑地搬了出来，希望自己- 是所问。
口说其难，也许你不相信，不就是一- 课嘛，你还别不服。咱打头说起，这- 课叫Molecular & Biochem Plnt Path，单看其名，就有3个关键词，每个- 单拉出来讲，都不容小觑，更何况它- 重装上阵，真难为了我们没有太多Mole- cular和Biochemisty底子的国际学生了。虽- 一开始老师就注意到班中18个学生中- 8个外国学生，并信誓旦旦声称考试- 简单，可是一到真格的丝毫没有留情- 每次讲课Dr. Brad那思维真叫跳跃，这个话题还没讲- 就扯到其他上了，难怪能在Cell上发- 章了。同实验室的美国同学也倍感压- ，其中一个早早注销了此课，陆陆续- 续不少人也退了下去。至于我，一方- 它是我们系的必修课，两位主讲老师- 我们系的，二则我已见识过一门堪称- “死亡谷”的课程—Advanced Mycology，咬咬牙也算坚持到了现在。
话说回来，每周我们都会收到2－3篇来- 自Plant Journal，Science，Cell等顶级期刊的文章- 定于每周三课后讨论。面对大量刻板- 书面语，我是读过之后不知其意，通- 常3，4遍后才勉勉强强有点概念，可想- 而知，最初我多是半途而止，回回面- 老师的狂轰乱炸，我都是扮作低头思- 状，生 怕老师点到自己。可以说每周三上午- 我最痛苦的时段，当然之前的阅读更- 人间炼狱。
日子没有因为痛苦而停下，马不停蹄- 捱到了中考。因为深知自己的实际情- ，不敢懈怠，连日来抓紧复习，连原- 本休息的周六也牺牲掉了，将吵来的- 记从头到位看了几遍，之前漏掉的文- 也重新啃起。说也奇怪，原本课上毫- 无头绪的模型，假说等在暴风骤雨般- 强化突击后，渐渐明朗起来，虽然说- 来还有点费力，但按照自己的理解写- 下来已不成问题。终于在行将考试前- 头扫到了尾，并重点理解了几番强调- 要点。
考试下来，感到无比的轻松，几天来- 有睡好的劲头在超级兴奋下现在才来- ，是时候补偿自己了。 -
Tax refund
又是一年报税时，今年学校依然给国- 学生安排了相关讲座。虽然自己已不- 第一次经历此事了，但保险起见，还- 是报名参加了周二的讲座。坐在法学- 的一个大教室里放眼望去，各种肤色- 种齐聚一堂，当然似乎还是中国人居- 多，我身边的2位就是。
捣鼓了一阵网络，终于连上了无限网- 此时本该开始的讲座不知何故迟迟不- 动静，趁着这空隙，上网找到了州税- 表，轻车熟路得填写了基本信息。由- 今年联邦税引入了一个系统，我们只- 填入相关信息，它就能生成最终的表- 格，我们都省了不少事，其间也没有- 多的疑问，好多人都轻轻松松得完成- 。随后的州税则按照知道老师事先完- 成的一份样表过了一遍，虽然没有太- 的计算过程，还是搞懵了一些人，当- 我也对其中的一些项目存在疑问，生- 怕一个错误导致后期返税的麻烦。记- 去年一同学因出错最终还要重新填表- 也不知后来结果如何。等全部完成后- ，我打算让他们帮我核查一遍，之后- 会考虑寄出。
对了，我就第二学位申请事宜联系了- 计系的小秘，我不用走常规的申请过- ，只要证明有2年的大学数学基础就- ，此外还要通过系主任的通过才行。- 妙的是，我一周来未受到系主任的任- 何回复，不知道其中是不是有了什么- 故。照理说应该不会，更何况他也是- 中国人，理当照顾下同胞吧。如果下- 周再收不到他的回复，不妨过去找他- 趟，将此事落实下来，接下来就该是- 老板工作的时候了。
今天晚上，abc将会直播奥斯卡颁奖礼- 还好现在能收到这个频道，届时要饱- 眼福了，大金人花落谁家也知晓了。- -
the changable weather
最近当地的天气变幻无常，周二当天- 高气温超过了60华氏，据说这书写了13- 0多年来同期的最高气温。冬日的积雪- 明媚阳光的照射下消逝地无影无踪，- 郁郁葱葱的青草也都显现出来。当然- 景不长，严寒再次笼罩了Michigan的上- ，于是风，雨，雪天气纷纷陆续登场- 没有给我们享受长久的春天气息，人- 们重新披上保暖的冬衣。
昨天是情人节，不知从何时雪花就纷- 降落人间，大地又披上了银装，给浪- 的情人节增添了一抹圣洁的色彩。在- 签完半年的合约后，我也算正式合法- 户Trappers cove。晚上洗过衣服，试了道新菜——- 肉，很简单，在肉表面涂完酱后，放- 入400F烘箱中烤至35分钟，这样一道鲜- 的菜肴就出炉了，味道还不错，也过- 把肉瘾。
今年赶得真巧，刚过去的节日似乎都- 在了周末。也陆续得到回国朋友被审- 的不幸消息，面对遥遥无期的签证，- 他们无能为力，当然这也给你他们足- 的时间陪伴亲朋好友，这里祝福他们- 日拿到签证，再次返美。我也不能懈- 怠，3月份的系里汇报，未完成的摘要- APS旅费的申请工作及poster都悬在我的- 头上，等待着完成。 -
朦胧的她
前不久一次无意的网上寻友，让我结- 了她，随后就一直保持着联系，确切- 说一切都发生在这个星期。由于有约- ，我每天晚上8点准时登陆MSN，守候着- 的出现。还好我都如愿以偿，并且聊- 得很开心，我也有幸收到了她的个人- 片。她很漂亮，很上相，当然不同的- 装给我的感觉差别迥异。我知道这样- 天天联系的日子随着她工作的到来，- 会持续得太久，我仍会努力。我也希- 你能正确地选择自己喜欢的职业，开- 启2009年的财富之门。
假如我在国内，定会去找她，好好看- 她现实中的模样，陪伴她度过浪漫的- 人节，短暂的温存我就很满足了。可- 惜，我身在异国，无法抽身离开，这- 美好的场景只能在梦境中一幕幕上演- 现在我不清楚自己在她心中的地位和- 她真实的想法，但她绝对是我眼中的- 神。希望你能留意到这片日志，领会- 我的内心世界。

Michigan的冬天似乎过去了，今天又是一- 个阳光灿烂的日子，小区内的行人似- 多了起来，坐在暖洋洋的太阳下十分- 意。现在再回头想想消逝的冬日，到- 处是冰雪，每周很少见到阳光，没有- 愿意呆在外面饱受寒风之苦。有人对M- ichigan冬天进行了恰当的诠释，在此与- 家分享下。我知道美国很多州没有冬- 天，许多当地人也因此没有机会体验- 冰雪的考验，这里对号入座，看看你- 没有勇气来北部，象Michigan， Wisconsin， North Dakota和Minnestona等州。

Is Spring here？
阳台上的积雪和冰溜已融化不见了踪- ，远处之前还被白雪皑皑覆盖的草地- 正恢复着往昔的生息，看似春天正向- Michigan走来，我不知道这样的天气能持- 续多久或是否正常。因为按照以往的- 例，1月和2月份正是当地最冷的时候- 下雪也是隔三差五的事，能真正迎来- 天差不多也得等到3，4月份吧。中国- 节气歌在这个三面被大湖环绕的地方- 是不通用的，即使春节已过去半个月- ，我们还得继续穿着冬衣，假如这样- 天气能持续的话，我们也不用每天出- 发前清理车上的薄冰了，人们行驶在- 速路上也不用过度提心吊胆了。
天气好，人的心情自然好，我的课题- 有了不小的进展。很幸运这学期老板- 个得力的本科生帮我干活，这样虽然- 有两们课程，还要准备3月份的seminar，- 但应付起来绰绰有余，没有了以往吃- 费劲的情况。之前一直有问题的PCR昨- 也终于成功，接下来的测序工作也就- 没有障碍了。同时投稿APS会议的摘要- 稿也已完成，并得到了老板的修改建- ，这也迈出了前往Portland的第一步，- 面还得申请旅费，为此我还要再完成- 一篇申请材料，面对自己没有太多技- 含量的摘要我觉得走这条路有点悬，- 没有办法还得照老板的意思做，但愿- 后面也能进展顺利，那么今年夏天就- 去美国的西北部走一遭了。还有，明- 就要见到我申请的美国家庭了，希望- 短短的1小时见面能让双方满意，我也- 此能以后经常与他们共度美国节假日- ，提高自己对美国文化的认知度和语- 水平，并争取在毕业之际找到理想的- 作。
当然不顺心的事也有。今天下午在Meije- r停车场被一侧面而来的车撞上，幸好- 速都不快，我车尾右侧只留下一凹槽- 和些许擦痕，由于没有经验，当时完- 懵了，该怎么办？对方是一美国妇女- 着儿子，见面后连连向我道歉，并相- 互留下了联系方式，我想这点小事故- 什么大不了的，还是不用打搅保险公- 的好，不过值得稍后问问身边美国人- 该怎样处理这类事故以备不时只需吧- 此外，现在每天太过规律的生活也让- 觉得乏味，与周围朋友见面聊天的时- 间骤减，每次连想打电话问候下的勇- 都没有了。这也许与漫长的冬天有关- 看着四周无尽的雪地，谁还有心思乱- 窜呀。于是每每捱到周末，一放松下- ，就觉得无所事事，只好看电影来打- 时间，当然也是时候更新下我喜欢的- 博客了。 -
Impression Washington D.C.
去Washington游玩一直是自己的一个心愿- 不仅仅是缘自玩过朋友的极力推荐，- 从他们口中已听倦了那里建筑的大气- 恢弘，更因为她在全世界的地位和影- 力。作为世界上最发达国家的首府，- 囊及耳熟能详的地标建筑像白宫，国- 山，各个部委的行政总部和点缀其间- 博物馆等等。如果不漫步其中，很难- 触摸到充斥美国的政治气息和百年历- 积淀。此外，今年黑人总统Obama的当- ，更使其成为世界关注的焦点。Obama- 上台，能否给目前陷入恶化的两伊战- 和席卷全球的金融风暴的美国带来希- 望，更是牵动着不少人的神经。
机会终于来了，我报名参加了一个教- 活动，从中申请到了部分车旅费，这- 我玩完Florida后12月28号即从Orlando的MCO- 直飞Washington的IAD机场，整个假期行程- 为连在了一起，也省了一趟飞机的钱- 。年底去游玩Washington，也正好体验下- 老总统交接期间的现场氛围。
Washington D.C.主要的景点比较集中，一个分布在d- owntown的National Mall地带，从东头的Capitol到延伸到西头- 的Lincoln Memorial，其中分布着Washington Monument, World War II Memorial 和White House等等，南北两边则坐落着著名的博- 物馆像National Museum of American History，National Museum of Natural History，National Gallery of Art，National Air and Space Museum，Smithsonian Institution Building等等。如果想仔细参观这些博物- 馆，差不多每个都需要一天的时间，- 这里享受博物馆带来的乐趣，是最好- 过的圣地了。另一个公认的景点则是- Arlington National Cemetery，没想到这已跑到了Virginia的地- 了，乘坐方便的地铁可轻松地到达这- 里，来直击下长眠与此的美国内战，- 战，二战，朝鲜战争，越南战争，阿- 汗战争和伊拉克战争所有兵种的近290- ,000死者的坟墓。一眼望不到尽头的各- 型号和形状的墓碑，令人叹为观止。- 对了这里也埋藏着几位美国总统，幸- 的话，按着标识可找到它们的藏身之- 。此外，每年春季来Tidal Basin附近的East Potomac Park观赏3700株樱花齐放的胜景，也是个- 不错的选择。
这里说说短暂逗留期间我到过的景点- 。National Mall中的建筑当然我都走了一遍，有幸- 到Capitol里参观了下，这可要提前网- 预定时间，到时会有专门的内部导游- 着游人观看部分区域，当然之前有严- 格的安检，我们倒没有因为是外国人- 受到特殊关照。Capitol由南北两翼楼群- 组成，分布着Senate Chamber， House Chamber，Old Supreme Court Chamber等政客办公场所。一开始的短片- 绍了她的历史由来，建筑布局和用途- 等等，对于没有深厚美国历史背景的- 国人来说还是显得晦涩难懂。随着导- ，我们穿厅过室，看到了知名的画作- ，园屋顶精美的浮雕和美国各州曾涌- 出的总统或其他重要历史人物。浮雕- 绘了首任总统华盛顿升天后被13个人- （象征最初独立的13州）簇拥着，外- 则代表了其他州。如果不听这段介绍- ，外人是很难理解其中的用意的。更- 意思的是，某室内巧妙运用了声学原- ，站在大厅一端小声说话，另一端的- 人神奇地能听到他们的谈话。当然导- 还给我们透漏了当初Obama进入Capitol所- 的路线，我们普通人今天也有幸在此- 走了一遭，也算Washington没白来。整个- 观过程不长，由于其特殊性，我们也- 只看到了冰山一角。
对于神秘的白宫，听说如果要参观的- ，必须提前几个月预定，却要有本州- 员之类的官员保荐才有机会进去。我- 们也就只好站在栏杆外面眺望几眼，- 句实在话，白宫很不起眼，如果别人- 告诉你，也许你根本不会相信的。虽- 然我们去那转了两趟，没见到任何在- 园子内散布的工作人员，更别提Bush及- 家人了。在这地方可不要撒野，说不- 什么地方蹦出个便衣把你带到呢。白- 对面耸立着俗称方尖碑的Washington Monument，通常远远地就能看到一对人，- 人们在排队登顶，我想从那里俯瞰，- 近的景致会尽收眼底，这种好事只好- 到下次了。往西走不远就到了由喷泉- 和石刻碑组成的World War II Memorial，是忆苦思甜的地方呀。离开它- 继续向西沿着一水池走，远远就能看- 一高大的白色建筑，沿台阶而上，就- 了Lincoln Memorial，里面空荡荡的，除了一巨型的- 林肯坐像和两侧墙壁上刻的宣言外，- 无它物，当然络绎不绝的游客使其显- 拥挤许多。在其门口照相是一绝佳位- 置，Mall里的重要建筑都留下了影子。
看过国家宝藏和博物馆不眠夜这两部- 片的朋友，也许知道它们发生的背景- 吧，那就是赫赫有名的National Museum of American History和National Museum of Natural History。到了首府，这两个博物馆是务- 要看看的。不仅仅因为供游人免费参- 观，而且从中获益是不可估量的。前- 重点展示的是美国历史，当然划分了- 同主题，像历次战争，美国总统夫人- 区，科技变革等。后者则联系着自然- 题，像恐龙化石骨架，不同类型的动- ，各种灾害性天气象地震，飓风等，- 及奥秘的宇宙和太阳系等专区。如果- 时间尽可以慢慢享用这无可比拟的视- 大餐，当然最好是上午早点去，这样- 省得排半天队，也可以在下午5点闭馆- 全部看遍。
前不久Obama在Capitol 前就职演说，吸引了上百万人前往，- 也透过照片寻找着我的足迹。不大的M- all区，那刻承载了失意美国人追寻变- 发生的源头。期盼Obama没让众人失望- 能带领美国人民在这方宝地走出困境-
