About Sheephead Films
Sheephead Films produces original Native American films, the majority of the films that we produce are made on the Navajo Nation and depict the reality of life on Navajoland. Sheephead Films consists of award winning Native film makers Shonie and Andee De La Rosa. We produce, direct, and edit all Sheephead Film productions, and have collaborated with many film companies and directors from all over the world on numerous productions. We firmly believe in portraying Native people with integrity, honesty, cultural accuracy and sensitivity. The Native American has been poorly depicted in film and media for far too long, we hope to change that with the work we produce.
Why the funny name Sheephead Films?
On the Navajo Nation, sheep are highly prized livestock by Navajos. When a sheep is butchered, we use every part of the sheep, nothing is wasted. This includes the head, the head is put into a fire to burn off all the hair, and it’s then cooked and eaten. Sheep head is considered a Navajo delicacy, some love it and some hate it. Hence the name Sheephead Films.

NATIVE ACTIVIST NORA BERNARD FOUND DEAD
Nora Bernard, noted Aboriginal Activist who spearheaded the successful 5 billion dollar law suite against the Crown (Canadian Government) on behalf of Indian Residential School Survivors, was found dead under suspicious circumstances.
According to police officials Nora Bernard was found dead in her Truro Nova Scotia home after a 911 call. This would not be the first time an Aboriginal Activist died under suspicious conditions in Canada or anywhere else on this continent though. From a Native perspective I find a strange coincidence in the deaths of our champions regardless of the official reports by authorities. Some of our heroes are debased before their bodies are in the ground as a form of justification regardless of the circumstances surrounding their deaths. And now, the death of a true heroine to the Native people of Canada dies. It was also reported family members believe it could have been a heart attack. I will await the final determination since police authorities found her death suspicious in any event. It makes me wonder if spin doctors are afoot already. Yea just can’t trust what you read these days.
Since the time of Montezuma’s wrongful death by the hands of the conquering people, (Cortez), Native champions have mysteriously died or were simply murdered since time immemorial. Remember Sitting Bull? Though it is not obvious to non Native people, within the Native world it is all too apparent to us. Our heroes are ear marked for assassination or public debasing at some time in their future. It is not a surprise since we as a people are artificially suppressed, our news watered down or not mentioned at all in the main stream media. You can’t connect the dots if the dots are not known in the first place. The world at large never gets the real picture and is fed lies about our true condition and plight. Established Native journalists have to walk a tight rope so as not to upset their funding sources. That’s how it goes eh.
For Native journalists and activists it is an occupational hazard since we know at some point in our careers we face the very real possibility someone will whack us, it’s as simple as that. Character assassination is another ploy used to discredit us to the outside world regardless of the merits of our news or causes. I know many true Native activists and sadly, we all know our death songs since it is only a matter of time before we take a hit mortally, financially or credibility wise. But the bullet seems to be the best way of silencing our heroes these days. Out of sight, out of mind, bada bing, bada bang, bada boom, Capice?
None dare call it conspiracy fore that would mean there is an undercurrent of assassins waiting to knock us off if we upset the ox cart. Our crime is exposing the raw hatred that exists for the original inhabitance of the America’s. Our crime is speaking the truth that never seems to make the press or simply ignored. I guess the death of a 72 year old grandmother just pisses me off big time. I truly hope she crossed from natural causes but will we actually know the truth? Double Speak is the order of the day anymore. Tell a lie long enough and it will become truth it seems.
With President Bush signing executive orders that clearly nullify the Constitution and the Bill of Rights it will not be long before legislation is passed by both the Democrats and the Republicans to silence the internet for national security sake. It is in black and white for all to see but do you think this lemming society pays attention? Not a chance since the wheels of censorship have already begun to turn and it will be all about “Homeland Security”. What really frosts my cookies is the fact all presidential candidates don’t make any mention of the new absolute power Bush gave the presidency in the last few months, in direct violation of the Constitution of the United States I might add. Why, because they also want this new power to dictate what is best for the people. They all hunger for this power to control the once free nation called America. But from a Native standpoint, it’s the same ole same ole since we live in captivity anyway. Only now, everyone else will get an opportunity to taste what it’s like living in captivity. Corporate Fascism has come full circle and now they are consuming their own and it’s all about the money Paisan, Capice?

Being the Krusty journalist that I am, I was pleased to find a story that was more "Christmassy" in a way. This story was brought to my attention by my cousin Paul Underwood from the rock band Exit Wound. After researching this piece I though it would be something I should share with the world, so here goes eh.
I think we can all safely say we know people who are suffering from a debilitating disease, either physical or mental. For the most part people are at a loss to deal or cope with them. Family members or friends of a disabled person, sometimes are at a loss as to how to address these issues; furthermore, the afflicted in many cases are thrust into depression with the feeling of hopelessness...Humanity Has No Disabilities

+ The Lakota infant mortality rate is 5x the U.S. Average.
+ The Tuberculosis rate on Lakota reservations is approx 800% higher than the U.S national average.
+ 97% of our Lakota people live below the poverty line.
+ Unemployment rates on our reservations are approximately 85%.
+ Teenage suicide rate is 150% higher than the U.S national average for this group.
+ Our Lakota language is an Endangered Language, on the verge of extinction.
We have no choice but to take this historic action to protect our people and our way of life, and reclaim our freedom from the colonial systems of the United States Government. So we travel t o Washington D.C. to withdraw from our treaties with the United States and announce full return of our sovereign status under Article 6 of the U.S. Constitution, International and Natural Law.
We are the freedom loving Lakota from the Sioux Indian reservations of Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota and Montana who have suffered from cultural and physical genocide in the colonial apartheid system we have been forced to live under. Though I am still awaiting further word about a radio broadcast I just heard, The Lakota Nation is declaring their independence from the United States of America. According to the broadcast they will soon be issuing their own passports, driver’s licenses and documents other nations of the world require as a separate nation. Information is sketchy at this juncture but I heard it for myself on the radio. So this is bound to raise eyebrows at the very least as the world digests this radio broadcast.
If this declaration is correct, NAFTA will also be a boom to this impoverished nation who has suffered since the time of conquest. In essence they would qualify for the all the perks other nations will get under this international compact. Granted they would be a third world and developing nation and qualify for yet more perks, whistles and bells.
My greatest fear is the repercussions from the Bush Administration and the iron fisted approach that will most likely ensue. This is the same time frame as the original “Wounded Knee Massacre” where innocent human beings were slaughtered in cold blood. Now, with this declaration of independence this nation faces the possibility of more bloodshed. The only difference is;

With all the chaos in the news these days, things can look pretty negative to say the least. But there is a silver lining it would appear. So we are living in the time of great change. Yea don’t have to buy into any of it and frankly, I don’t really care since it is your choice. All I am is a messenger, take it or leave it. With the news and data available for all to see, there is no real excuse as to why people simply don’t get it other than this lemming mentality.
Elders say that society is likened to chickens rushing to eat the corn the ole farmer is tossing in the coup. They rush here and they rush there not caring who they step on to get the corn. And all the while the ole farmer is sizing up these chickens to find the plumpest one to butcher.
But not everyone is buying into this race for the corn, so to speak. And happily there are human beings that cross cultural lines who see the reality of the world around them. In one vision I was shown a globe and on this globe was these purple dots. When these dots were connected they formed a loosely strung net of sorts around the Earth. I was told this would be humanities safety net for the more turbulent times ahead mankind will face.
Further, my elders told me many people would simply not buy into the concept of Changing Times regardless of how ancient this notion is. Many more than not would rather adhere to the material consequence of contemporary society. But this loosely strung safety net would save a few and that is all that really matters. It ain’t nothing but meatball to me Paisan. So I’m a Krusty messenger eh……lol.
Fortunately for humanity there are many others who see what I see. In the last year I must have met hundreds of other people I consider purple dots fore they all share the same visions. They cross all national and racial boundaries. From musicians and entertainers to civil engineers and airline pilots, even street kids like me. We all share this axiom of Changing Times and Humanitarianism. Just blows my mind since I was told about this back in the early 90’s in a vision. Now it is coming to pass on a scale I never could have possibly imagined. We truly are living in a time of great change. If you can not see it yet, eventually I guarantee you will, for your sake. For us purple dots, it’s already a done deal, Bada Bing, Bada Bang, Bada Boom, Capice?

It's just one of them boring news days. Every major financial institution in the free world is on the verge of collapse. Corruption is at an all time high as world leaders scramble to make a buck on a personal and Corporate Fascist note. Global Warming has been considered a boom to the shipping industry as coastlines disappear around the world. Oil and gas, lol don't make me puke. Nature has already begun the revolt as gangs of killer jelly fish swarm fishing hostels. Plagues beyond epidemic proportions are spreading around the world. Human rights violations go unchecked and take a back burner for the sake of profiteering. While the world at large says nothing as the public is lead around by their noses in this Pollyanna rose colored vision of all is nice.
So what if scientists in South Korea cloned cats that glow in the dark. They would be easier to spot by rouge mice Japanese scientists genetically engineered with no fear of cats. Then there is NAFTA and the loss of millions of American jobs. Self sufficiency of this nation was replaced by dependants on other less than friendly nations. Like a monkey trap where the monkey refuses to release the banana in the bottle and is imprisoned by his own greed. The US was not hard to conquer, just let their greed lead them down the path to their own demise. What are we thinking eh. It's all about the money anyway, Capice?
So the real headliner on this Monday is the Flatulent Cow of Edinburgh England. The back side of a mechanical cow was affixed to the Rowan Pub in old town. Literally, like clock work the cow breaks wind at 11:00 and 13:00 (GMT) with a complement of dry ice for visual and sound effects. It is a befitting statement of the times we live since most politicians give us hot air at best. At least the cow is dependable and does what it was intended to do.

There is no question Bill Clinton sold the US down the tubes when he gave China “Most Favored Nation” status back during his days of corruption. And we should not forget Ronnie Reagan’s inclusion of the Social Security Funds to make it look like we have a thriving balanced budget. In 1998 the term was changed to “Normal Trade Relations” (NTR) to mask this bogus Favored Nation’s scam designed only to benefit Industry at the expense of the US labor force. With NAFT, yet more jobs and industries went by the wayside and there are more to come, believe it or not. Then here came old King George W. Bush who’s lined the already fattened pockets of the greedy Corporate Fascists who’ve taken over America. And no one fired a shot. LOL, America has become a country that is totally dependent on others to survive, all for the sack of making a profit for a select few. And from a Native standpoint, oh well, to bad, so sad since we were not included in the so called American Dream. Fact is we’ve been thrust into abject poverty and ignored by this Land of Milk and Honey for the most part.
All the while, US industries have been seeking out cheap labor and moving millions of jobs to other nations. These nations don’t have environmental laws or are exempt, cheap labor with no benefits or health care/retirement concerns and dispensable Indigenous populations living on land rich with natural resources. Unbenounced to the American public China has been quietly buying up US Treasury Bonds and gaining control of the US economy. China’s trade surplus has literally squeezed the life out of the US work force while Corporate Fascists drank the wine of corruption and invested in the new budding economy of China. Industry Lobbyists have become the new voice of America. The lemming mentality of the population follows the Pied Piper’s of both the Democratic and Republican Parties down the path to financial and economic pandemonium. And it’s all about the money. To funny, since the joke is on the US fore there truly is no difference other than the talking heads. Hillary Barak Guilliani for president. When you realize that industry and the media are supporting them all it paints a darker picture than once realized. On the streets it was called “Good Cop, Bad Cop”
With data available while living in this era of the “Information Super Highway” there is no excuse for what is about to happen in the US financial circus. Bernake, a Bush puppet, has cut interest rates to the chagrin of Allen Greenspan. Incidentally Greenspan warned these rate cuts will be catastrophic in the long run to say the least. The quick fix will have dire consequences. Or are you paying attention? Ah but greed has a blind eye eh. The fate of the US economy is in the hands of others at this juncture and our Corporate Fascist Leadership has sold America for the sake of profits and the bottom line for the select few who will profit when the market finally crashes. The select few who’ve cashed in when the stock market crashed back in 29’. Someone hit the jackpot when America was thrown to its knees. The money went somewhere fore it did not simply disappear. And the descendants of these greedy families will glean more riches, again.
With corruption at the highest levels before Mao cleaned the slate, China has become the new financial power. They are beating the US at their own game since Beijing learned from the masters, the US in the art of deception and greed. With 1.5 million innocent Chinese people forced from their homes for this less than noble Olympic venture, US Industrialists have invested heavily while finding a foothold on the backs of homeless human beings. Blinded by greed and the lusting for material consequence Corporate Fascists have taken the bait and it’s only a matter of time before the US is subservient to others. Only then the population will realize they’ve been had by their elected officials, both Democrats and Republicans. Hello Mc Fly……
Dare I mention how totally dependent we’ve become to China for chemicals within the pharmaceutical industry? It has become a quite national emergency as told by industry insiders since medicines that stop plagues are in their hands at this juncture. Take a gander and see for yourselves. Or are you hoping it will go away? The game of chess is complex and America is playing checkers while others prepare to place us in checkmate. Or just maybe this is all calculated, does New World Order ring an bell? Whence nations of the world disappear we will be one world order if industry has its way. Here is that world domination thing again boys and girls. And as we all know, World Domination has always been the sacred cow of leaders since time immemorial. Wish I could tell you my visions, but you would not believe an old Injun guy anyway. All I can say is, “You reap what you sow” and the fate of mankind has long since been foretold on both sides of the great pond.
How many wars do we need to keep this war based economy afloat? Sadly, when the war of true survival finally comes into view the US will be hard pressed to find allies. Historically we as a nation have turned our backs on our allies such as Burmese Freedom Fighters and the loyal Mungs of Viet Nam, just to mention a few. The list is very long and quite telling fore it paints a picture of betrayal and lies that is most unforgivable. Just ask any American Indian about treaties, broken promises and betrayal. Our people are still under siege while Pollyanna’s ask us to forgive and forget without having a clue as to the totality of our plight. We are still dying as eugenics finds a new guise in ambivalence. Only now, others will soon see what we’ve endured. Tag, you’re it boys and girls fore greed has finally come full circle. And it’s all about the money Paisan, Capice?

In writing this interview I was poised with two options. I could write about this beautiful award winning actress/playwright/singer and the many accomplishments and awards she has earned fore there are many. Andrea and her producer and co-writer Robert Walsh took Canada by storm as this songstress forged a trail to fame with her enchanting voice and acting prowess. Rabbit Falls, a TV series has become a favorite on the Aboriginal People’s Television Network and a second season is on the horizon. I’ve reviewed the show and was quite jealous that we don’t get APTN here in the states.
Born, 1971 in Flin Flon Manitoba from humble Métis roots her reflections brought us to a time when she was a little girl. Her father was lovingly known as “The King of the Kitchen Party” since it was the norm for Métis families and friends to sing and enjoy the day. Her mother was a singer and little Andrea was the back up singer. Andrea held dear these memories of her youth and accredited her family for planting the seeds that has blossomed into her wondrous career.
It was never her intention to become a singer. Fact is she did not imagine or consider singing as an occupation and something to get paid for. Music and singing was simply a part of her childhood and a very real part of the Métis way of life. From serving in the Canadian Army to being voted Saskatoon’s Sexiest Female by readers of Planet S Magazine, Andrea has come of age. She’s performed before His Royal Highness, The Earl of Wessex, Prince Phillip, His Royal Highness, The Prince of Wales and yes, Her Royal Majesty, Queen Elizabeth just to name a few. Not bad for a little Native girl from Flin Flon eh.
As we discussed her career it became obvious to me that there was yet another story or as I mentioned earlier, another option. I came to know her not only an accomplished performer but a driven woman. The love of her people became most apparent to me as she began to share the inner Andrea Menard. She had something to prove to the world. Though her career was in full swing she had an agenda that many others would not have considered. She wanted to show the world that Native people were not relegated only to the restrictive roles so often given. And prove she did fore Andrea completely shattered this myth since she excelled in genres never considered possible. The stereotypical Tontoesk imagery of “Tom Tom Beating” Natives has forever been cast afoul.
Like Rick Dakotah concert pianist and musical maven extraordinaire, Andrea has shown the world that Native People can achieve and excel in genres once not considered possible or allowable. Her talent has broken the constrictive mold that was cast around Native entertainers since time immemorial. In Canada, she has managed to cross the invisible racial barrier. Canadians from all ethnic origins and skin tone have come to love this wonderfully talented Métis girl. An enchantress by every stretch of the imagination, Andrea has captivated all who were fortunate to be enriched by her performances. She truly has become a world class artist and the pride of the Métis Nation.
Ah, but there is more to this articulate songstress. As we enjoyed our conversation we began to share the innermost aspects of our personas. We began to share concepts of life and our spirituality. Truly aware of the times we live; Andrea was more than forthcoming about her desire to help humanity through her art. The lyrics of many of her songs told stories of the realities within Native life. From tales of her childhood to ballads about the human condition Andrea had become a messenger of hope and healing in the troubled times we live. We joked about the contrast of the two of us. Andrea, the messenger of love and healing then me, the crusty hard bitten journalist, but we shared the same vision. About a month ago she called me her brother in spirit and after this interview I must agree with her. We are dedicated to making a positive difference within the First Nation and humanity as a whole. It was once said Andrea Menard was the Good Will Ambassador of the Métis Nation. I contend she is the Good Will Ambassador of Humanity.
