About me

Kwaku Alston was struck with a love for photography early on while growing up in Maryland and Pennsylvania as the middle child of three. He received a BFA in photography from The Rochester Institute of Technology in 1994. After graduation, Kwaku moved to New York City and began his career by shooting his first job for The New York Times Magazine. The success of this first assignment led to a diverse roster of clients, representing music, entertainment and advertising worlds.

Kwaku's images are classic, conveying messages of pride and history by tapping in to his subject’s core, Kwaku encourages each subject to reveal beauty from within. He captures the essence of the subject in a way that is purely uplifting. The subject has to feel comfortable in front of the camera, says Kwaku. The most important thing is allowing the photo shoot to be their time. Kwaku is able to put nearly any subject at ease with his gregarious personality and a lot of laughter.
