Farners' Suicides in India
Farmers’ Suicides & Dr. Abhay Bang--------------
In Maharashtra and some parts of Karnataka, two states in India, farmers are committing suicides and this has assumed serious proportions. Nearly ten thousand farmers have ended their lives in Maharashtra and social scientists are finding the reasons thereof. There is no use blaming politicians for this calamity as politicians have no time to look into the matter. They are busy in grazing or washing their dirty linens shame-facedly or busy in their criminal activities as usual. Politicians in this country is bad lot and the less we talk of them the better.
Many social thinkers have come up with many reasons for farmers’ suicides but everybody has forgotten the most obvious. Population Explosion is main culprit in this regard and for this there is no solution. Now you will ask me how this can be the reason of farmers suicides. The answer is simple! Population in this country has increased by geometric proportion. While land has not increased, its productivity has increased. Now one farm of ten hectares was owned by family in 1950. Supposing there were four sons(minimum) in the family. Now they have grown up and each married and everyone gave birth to four children. So there are now 16 children between whom the same farm is divided. The simple logic tells us this dividing game will continue. 16 will become 32, and 32 will become 64 and so on and so forth. But land will be static and population depending on the land will be growing. As a result a small piece of land will be available to the last man and that is not productive. This is what is happening nowadays. The small land has to be sold to first customer and new generation has to move to other vocation and job. Perhaps they have to leave Family and hearth. They have to learn new skills and new avenues and settle elsewhere. This in short is story of farmers’ suicides.
If anything goes wrong in this country and people are not able find solutions then blame it on Liquor. And anybody who starts agitation against Drink, he becomes popular. Now Dr. Bang has done exactly that. He says that the liquor is main culprit in this game. As it is Dr Bang is a highly respected doctor and doctor’s opinion in this matter is final. We have seen that the real reasons for suicides of farmers are different. It is less land available for farming, power cuts and many others. Farmers get frustrated due to them. And some of them may be getting the solace in drinking. But drink is not certainly driving them to suicides. And how can be sole reason of a farmer’s suicide? That means all the farmers who committed suicides are drinkers. But statistics show this is not the case. So giving due respect to Dr Bang, we can safely say that drink is not the only reason for farmers suicides. Think about the thousands of people who are making a living on liquor. Think about the thousands of people who moderately enjoy their drink and remain sober. Wine and liquor industry is a great industry of our economic progress. Drink is not bad, but frustration is bad gentlemen!
