Blog / Your children are not your children !

Your children are not your children.
They are the sons and daughters of Life’s longing for itself.
They come through you but not from you.
And though they are with you, yet they belong not to you.

You are Yesterday and they are Tomorrow….
You may give them your love but not your thoughts, for they have their own thoughts.
You may house their bodies but not their souls, for their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow, which you cannot visit even in your dreams.
You may strive to be like them, but seek not to make them like you, as life goes not backward nor tarries with yesterday.

You are the bows from which your children as living arrows are sent forth.
The Archer sees the mark upon the path of the infinite, and He bends you with His might that His arrows may go swift and far.
Let your bending in the Archer’s hand be of gladness; for even as He loves the arrow that flies, so He loves the bow that is stable.

Gibran Kahlil Gibran

    :)
Each time I read "Children", I think of that teacher who presented this poem to a class of innocent wide-eyed children of 7 to 8 yr olds whose only contact with poetry might have been in the form of nursery rhymes; worlds away from the ilk of Gibran's genius. To me, on reading the poem, it felt as if Cupid's arrow had hit me between my eyes.
Thank you for posting it Insight. It's always a humbling experience and a pleasure reading it, ad infinitum, even.

A true vision to life. We are always tempter by the notion of being owners. We are tempted to think we own our childred, we own our wives, evenmore, to own our bodies. Though wrong we are, still there are some of us who believe they own their parents. It's like we are living in a circle of egocentricity. It's not amazing that we see those who believe they own others who so honestly serve them. Only a few people have recovered from the ownership-prperty complex.

As far as I ,myself have found it, we are only keepers, or say caretakers of all those above. We are also responsible. It is not an honor, nor is it a property. It's a duty. We have to play the differnt parts we have in life. You are a parent? Keep to the rules of good parenthood. You are a son? Keep to the rules. and so on. Unfortunately, only honest people are those who can do this, but they need much learning, and much practice too.

Thank you for the wise quote you have posted on your blog herein.

Love and blessings to you, deep from my heart.
