G'day, I'm new here and to the world of Linux. Have heard of a few of the Linux distribution names and would like your input / knowledge on one to start with as a first timer and why.

You can get the liveCD here: http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download
Check the md5's and burn at a nice slow speed (Possibly 10x)
You can then; Boot from disk and see what it's like (Thus allowing you to decide if you want to use it or just keep your current OS)
Or go on to partitioning your HDD and 'installing'

Any of the Ubuntu distributions are good for beginners. This is because of great hardware detection and setup for the most part. Ease of software installation.
I prefer Kubuntu myself because I am a KDE guy and LinuxMint has a good system. Based on Ubuntu they have both a Gnome and KDE available. (As well as others)
As much as I dislike Ubuntu as a distro I have to agree with you there!
candig: Ubuntu will do you good as a first distro
If you're coming over from windows, KDE may suit you well.
