Our Saturday night out was to listen to the Surrey based "Vivace Chorus" choir singing Verdi's Requiem, at Guildford Cathedral, Surrey.
The performance was dedicated to the memory of the soldiers who died in the wars ... Verdi's Requiem says:
"grant them eternal rest, Lord, and may perpetual light shine upon them"
(well, it was sung in operatic in Latin - and I couldn't understand it, so the programme came in mighty handy!)
As you watch, I ask two things of you:
Please spare a thought for those who gave up their lives for the blessings you now enjoy.
And, on 11th November at 11am, whatever you happen to be doing at the time, please pause for 2 minutes silence in remembrance of those brave men who suffered (and continue to do so even to this day) on your behalf.

ps sorry for the 'blue' bits that cut between the frames - was not intentional!

thanks alan. the first world war seems to have hit my heart real badly. i just see it as a complete waste of life - even those men thought otherwise and gave up their comforts of home in order to save it.
it brings a lump to my throat too - whenever i watch anything related to it.
just think, none of those men in those photographs are alive now. there's only one left - harry patch. i hope the people around him are treating him well and he's not stuffed in some 'old folks' home with his chair with its back to the wall ... i'm sure they'll make some special event for him this year at the remembrance sunday parades around the country. i hope they do.

I have to say that war has always fascinated me, the why's and the ways they are fought. My father and grandfather were always telling me stories about friends and family lost, dad was in the merchant navy supplying ammunition and my grandfather was very briefly in the army during WW11 but was sent to the mines due to deafness. When i watched Palins documentary the other night, i also felt some of the pain and sorrow of such brave souls, Still can't register the losses in my head. They were telling us that even though some of the generals knew the war was at an end in the final hours they were still sending their men over the top to gain only metres of muddy no mans land... I felt a little sick to say the least. Mr Patch was also on there giving his story even though he had not spoken about it for years, ( bless him),.. he still seems to have all his marbles though, a very humble man in my opinion.... Good Morning you two.. Just loved the architecture in that cathedral, would have liked to have heard the acoustics with the choir singing.. Have only ever been in Durham cathedral but would like to visit saint pauls one day.. Watched the last days of WW1 on tv the other night with Michael Palin, was well documented and did not half give me a lump in my throat.. Kept thinking of you as i was watching, kept thinking of the passion and dedication you put into your videos and blogs on the subject.. Keep up the good work Kaye, enjoyed the video... will chat about our other venture real soon ok.. Alan xx
