  • Review of the junta’s 2008 constitution is a MUST before p

    8 July 2009

Burma Democratic Concern (BDC) calls for the international community to pay close attention to what the democratic forces are saying especially the “Shwe-Gone-Dine” declaration by the National League for Democracy (NLD).

Aung San Suu Kyi and her party the National League for Democracy (NLD), the unanimous victors of the 1990 election, clearly stated their position in the “Shwe-Gone-Dine” Declaration.

NLD outlined the five main principles that need to place in order to have true national reconciliation. They are:

    1. Release of all the political prisoners
    2. Review of draft 2008 Constitution
    3. Allow to reopen NLD and ethnic nationalities offices
    4. Recognition of the 1990 election result
    5. Political dialogue

These are the fundamental demands requested by legitimate leaders of Burma. If the international community truly wanted to see national reconciliation in Burma, they must find ways to facilitate these demands rather than playing into the junta’s illegal 2010 election.

Before we could possible address the junta’s proposed 2010 election we must address the validity of the recently adapted constitution. Drafted by the junta, this document is far from credible or constitutional. Free, fair and all inclusive is not what this document represents.

We would like to draw particular attention on these points:

    1. The Junta gave itself amnesty from the crimes against humanity it has perpetrated throughout Burma during their reign of terror.

    2. The Military regime systematically took 25% of the parliamentary seats. The military commander in chief was also given absolute authority to dissolve the parliament at any time effectively neutralizing the voice of the people.

The junta’s planned 2010 election is only a charade designed to legitimise the military dictatorship within Burma. The International Community should be aware of the hopelessly irreconcilable contents of the constitution that was adopted in 2008. The referendum was ushered into existence under questionable conditions including extortion and rigged ballots. Giving the military junta 25% of the parliamentary seats, unbridled authoritarian control and a self serving amnesty for the crimes against humanity were truly not the will of the Burmese people. Legitimizing the criminal regime was also not the will of the people and this is incomprehensible and totally unacceptable to the Burmese people.

It should not be forgotten that in spite of promises made by the military junta in the 1990 which they sponsored they did not relinquish power when they lost the election. Even though Aung San Suu Kyi and her party won a landslide victory the junta chose to ignore the election results and the voice of the people of Burma. Further, the junta arrested the victors including Aung San Suu Kyi. Later they also tried to assassinate Aung Suu Kyi and continue to arrest and imprison pro democracy activists.

Now to insure they will not loose the 2010 election they have intensified the arrests of democratic proponents and concocted charges against Aung San Suu Kyi to eliminate her influence in this sham election. Ironically the architects of the 1990 election are the very same generals who’ve plotted this latest scam to nullify the voice of the people in this rigged election. With victory in their sights the junta has already made plans for after the election clearly indicating this election is a sham. Obviously there will be no need to count the votes since it would be an exercise in futility.

    4 July 2009

Day 19: Aung San Suu Kyi on "Peace, Development and Justice"

Peace, development and justice are all connected to each other. We cannot talk about economic development without talking about peace. How can we expect economic development in a battle field? It would not be possible. But there are more than one kind of battle field in this world. A battle field is not necessarily a place where people are shooting each other. In a civil society, where basic human rights are ignored, where the rights of the people are violated every day, it is like a battle field where lives are lost and people are crippled, because people can lose their lives. And the development of their lives can be crippled by a lack of basic human rights. So when we talk about peace, we can not avoid talking about basic human rights, especially in a country like Burma where people are troubled constantly by a lack of human rights and a lack of justice and a lack of peace.

In honour of Burma's Legitimate Leader Aung San Suu Kyi's 64th Birthday, Burma Democratic Concern (BDC) will recall Aung San Suu Kyi's dictum.

Day (1): "Words need to be back up by Action"

“There have been many words supporting democracy, and we are duly grateful for them, because we do not underestimate the power of words. But words need to be backed up by action -- by action that is united and that is focused on essentials. Only by such action will we be able to realize our democratic aspirations”. (Aung San Suu Kyi)

  • Burma Democratic Concern (BDC) Warmly Welcomes Mr Obama's S

    27 May 2009

Burma Democratic Concern (BDC) warmly welcomes United States President Mr Barack Obama called on the Burmese government to release National League for Democracy Secretary General and Nobel Peace Prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi from detention immediately and unconditionally.

Mr Obama said, “I strongly condemn her house arrest and detention, which have also been condemned around the world. It is time for the Burmese government to drop all charges against Aung San Suu Kyi and unconditionally release her and her fellow political prisoners”.

We are very encouraged to learn Mr Obama support to free Aung San Suu Kyi and to restore justice in Burma. But, words alone are not enough. Words should be backed up by actions- actions focusing on essentials-applying united and coordinated pressure on Burma through United Nations Security Council to force junta to come to dialogue table and to free Aung San Suu Kyi along with thousands of political prisoners.

Burma crisis is in very critical situation. Junta is planning to hold elections in 2010 without honouring 1990 elections results. Burmese people have already voted for Aung San Suu Kyi as their leader in 1990 elections. Regime still ignores to honour it and to pave the way for their rigged 2010 election plan, junta plot the ploy to imprison Aung San Suu Kyi, continue arresting democracy activists, and suppressing on the civilians intensified more than ever.

Burma Democratic Concern (BDC) recalled Mr Obama’s birthday whished for Aung San Suu Kyi on her 63rd birthday, last year by saying “If the junta continues its failure to protect the dignity, health and well-being of the Burmese people, the international community must be prepared to work harder toward effective coordinated action, including but not limited to action through the United Nations Security Council”.

Burma Democratic Concern (BDC) believes that this is the time to translate words into actions and we would like to request Mr Obama to take practical action on Burma through United Nations Security Council to help free Burmese people.

  • Burma Democratic Concern (BDC) Calls For Russian Government

    26 May 2009

Burma Democratic Concern (BDC) demands the Russian government for their support in achieving justice for Aung San Suu Kyi and the peaceful restoration of democracy in Burma. With a global community comes a global responsibility, the crisis in Burma falls well within the scope and responsibility if this international mutualisation.

The people of Burma call for international support in putting to an end to Burma’s long standing crisis. Russia’s role is critical in evolving positive change in Burma since it is a permanent member of United Nations Security Council.

Burma Democratic Concern (BDC) recollects the United Nations Security Council Presidential Statement on Burma in October 11, 2007. It called for the Burmese military regime to; “release all political prisoners and to create the necessary conditions for a genuine dialogue with Daw Aung San Suu Kyi in order to achieve an inclusive national reconciliation with the direct support of the United Nations.”

The Security Council also called on Burma’s junta to; “take all necessary measures to address the political, economic, humanitarian, and human rights issues that are the concern of its people and emphasizes that the future of Myanmar lies in the hands of all of its people.”

With the collective action taken by all permanent members of United Nations Security Council, i.e. US, UK, France, Russia and China as well as other Security Council members, the presidential statement was issued on 11 October 2007 and sent a very powerful message to the junta that the world is watching and it won’t let the Burmese people to be massacred.

We want the Russian Government and its citizens to know that Burmese people have been suffering under a brutal military dictatorship for more than half century. During this time thousands of people lost their lives, thousands have been arrested and imprisoned and thousands were forced to flee for their lives while seeking refuge around the world.

Our aspirations for democracy by nonviolent means are well documented. Our legitimate leader, Aung San Suu Kyi has been courageously leading the struggle for freedom, liberty, democracy and human rights in Burma.

Aung San Suu Kyi was elected by the citizens of Burma in the 1990 General Election. Ironically that election was conducted by the same generals who suppress Burma today. Aung San Suu Kyi has become icon of the humanities to the people of Burma as well as the world.

We are all too aware of global politics and the power struggle between the East and the West. From the Burmese perspective these international differences have negatively impacted the crisis in Burma by polarizing our struggle internationally. As the international community bickers with one another our people are paying dearly with their lives.

In a recent United Nations Security Council Press Release, 22 May 2009, it reaffirmed the UN’s position by saying; “The members of the Security Council reiterate the need for the Government of Myanmar to create the necessary conditions for a genuine dialogue with Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and in order to achieve an inclusive national reconciliation with the support of the United Nations and reiterate that the future of Myanmar lies in the hands of all of its people”.

We are encouraged to see the United Nations Security Council Presidential Statement and the Press Statements on Burma. It calls for the military junta to establish a genuine dialogue with Aung San Suu Kyi and release all political prisoners. Then it warned the junta that it cannot proceed with its own unilateral way by saying “the future of Burma lies in the hands of all Burmese people”.

Junta’s planned 2010 election is designed to legitimised military rule in Burma. To pave the way for their rigged 2010 election plan, junta continue imprisoning democracy activists, plotting the ploy to imprison Aung San Suu Kyi and doing everything they can to nullify 1990 election results.

Currently, Aung San Suu Kyi is charged and tried in the Insein prison relating to the swimmer incident which could end up at least 5 years imprisonment.

This is junta’s cunning act to imprison Aung San Suu Kyi as her 6 years house arrest would be reached on 27 May 2009. Junta wanted to lock Aung San Suu Kyi in jail forever as their rigged 2010 election plan is drawing nearer in which they are setting up everything to win their backed party.

Burma is in very critical state.

The People of Burma look to the leaders of Russia in an effort to garner support for a democratic Burma. They also seek healing from years of a ruthless military dictatorship. Russia would ease the suffering as a democratic Burma rises from the ashes of tyranny.

  • SOS : Aung San Suu Kyi (Taking Concrete Action) !!!

Aung San Suu Kyi is ailing; junta is denying giving proper medical treatment!

    11 May 2009

Aung San Suu Kyi is very unwell and specialist emergency medical attention is needed. She was suffering from dehydration, low blood pressure and not able to eat well. Aung San Suu Kyi has been under house arrest for 13 years in last 19 years. Instead of giving her full medical attention which desperately needed junta arrested her personal doctor. Junta’s shear brutality has reached epic perorations in senseless crimes against humanity by denying giving proper medical treatment to ailing Aung San Suu Kyi. The free and democratic world has a moral responsibility to intervene on behalf of humanity.

“The criminal regime of Than Shwe has crossed the boundaries of morality as well as sanity,” said Myo Thein, Director at the Burma Democratic Concern (BDC).

United States, United Kingdom and United Nations leadership have been unbelievably silent. Barack Obama, Gordon Brown and Ban Ki-Moon must open their mouths and voice for justice, voice for humanity and voice for well being of Aung San Suu Kyi. Her party, NLD, won landslide victory in 1990 general election but regime still ignore to honour it. Instead put Aung San Suu Kyi under house arrest and she has spent 13 of the last 19 years.

Aung San Suu Kyi’s detention expired for continuous five years and regime extended another year even though under 1975 Emergency Law Section 10(:) does not allow anyone to detain more than five consecutive years. The junta is violating its own law by extending her detention period last year. Aung San Suu Kyi will complete six years of continuous detention on 27 May 2009. International community must demand the junta to give Aung San Suu Kyi proper medical attention and to release her immediately.

Junta is Plotting the Ploy to Imprison Aung San Suu Kyi

SOS : Aung San Suu Kyi !

    14 May 2009

Aung San Suu Kyi is now charged and tried in the Insein prison relating to the swimmer incident which could end up at least 3 years imprisonment.

“International Community shouldn’t sit tight and just look; they must act and voice for JUSTICE for Aung San Suu Kyi and voice for Burma”, said Myo Thein, Director at the Burma Democratic Concern (BDC) in United Kingdom. UN and world leaders must demand that Aung San Suu Kyi’s house arrest mustn’t be in any case extended and junta must avoid wrongly charging her relating to swimmer incident.

“I would like to call for Mr Barack Obama, Mr Gordon Brown and Mr Ban Ki-Moon to raise your voice and call for the junta to halt any charges against Aung San Suu Kyi”, added Myo Thein.

This is a ploy.

“I couldn’t believe that three most powerful leaders of the free world are unbelievably silent”. As there is a saying in Burmese, “Silencing is agreeing”, and I become doubtful that “Is there any Justice in the world”, said Khin Maung Win, Director at the Burma Democratic Concern (BDC) in United States.

Burma Democratic Concern (BDC) warned that in advance on 12 May 2009 that junta is plotting the ploy to imprison Aung San Suu Kyi. Now, the most fearful thing which we anticipated has come true. The question is “How UN, EU, ASEAN, and International Community will take action to stop injustice going on in Burma”, added Kyaw Lin Oo, Director at the Burma Democratic Concern (BDC) in Thailand.

    BDC welcomes Brown !

    14 May 2009

Burma Democratic Concern (BDC) warmly welcomes British Prime Minister Mr Gordon Brown's statement regarding justice for Aung San Suu Kyi.

“The Prime Minister said he was disturbed that Aung San Suu Kyi may be charged with breaching the terms of her home detention in Burma”.

"We would like to express our sincere appreciation over Mr Brown's brave action", said Myo Thein, Director at the Burma Democratic Concern (BDC) in United Kingdom

“This is only the first step. We have a long way to go”, added Myo Thein. We wanted to see more action. Other world leaders should follow the suit of Mr Brown. Crisis in Burma is in pivotal state and we must take immediate actions to intervene to stop injustice in Burma. US, EU and ASEAN governments must take action immediately on Burma. Clock is ticking and we have no time to waste.

SOS: Aung San Suu Kyi Update (Time to Translate Words into Actions)

    17 May 2009

We are very encouraged to learn that world leaders, celebrities, and people around the world show their support and expressed their concerns for Aung San Suu Kyi. But they mustkeep on pressing on junta until Aung San Suu Kyi is free. Especially Ban Ki-Moon must personally engage on Burma crisis.

Releasing statements expressing concerns alone are not enough. To be freed Aung San Suu Kyi, all necessary actions must be taken. We must keep on pressing world leaders to translate their WORDS into ACTION. We would like to request you to keep on demanding your respective governments, presidents, prime ministers, MPs, senators and congressmen to keep on pressuring Burmese junta until Aung San Suu Kyi is free.

The followings are what they said:

    British Prime Minister Gordon Brown

"Regime is clearly intent on finding any pretext, no matter how tenuous, to extend her unlawful detention".

    U.S. President Barack Obama

"The crisis between the United States and Burma ... has not been resolved. These actions and policies are hostile to U.S. interests. For this reason, I have determined that it is necessary to ... maintain in force the sanctions against Burma to respond to this threat."

European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso

"Instead of being arrested she should have been released from house arrest, which was a clear violation of international law as determined by the United Nations".

Democratic Senator John Kerry and Republican Senator Richard Lugar, the top Senate Foreign Relations Committee members

“Now is the time for reform-minded leaders within the military to step forward and be heard. This action (charging Aung San Suu Kyi) sends precisely the wrong message to the citizens of Burma, the people of Southeast Asia, and all those in the global community who seek for the Burmese people the opportunity to live in a country where universal human rights are respected, not trampled”

The US Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton

“I am deeply troubled by the Burmese Government’s decision to charge Aung San Suu Kyi for a baseless crime. We oppose the regime’s efforts to use this incident as a pretext to place further unjustified restrictions on her. We called on the Burmese authorities to release her immediately and unconditionally, along with her doctor and the more than 2,100 political prisoners currently being detained”.

‘The Elders Group’, a group consisting of World dignitaries including former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, South Africa’s Archbishop and Nobel Peace Laureate Desmond Tu Tu and Nelson Mandela

“Release our sister now! Absurd ‘trial’ is an excuse to extend her incarceration. We stand by Aung San Suu Kyi and call on world leaders to demand her immediate release.”

The United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon

“Gravely concerned about the news that Daw Aung San Suu Kyi has been shifted to Insein Prison to face criminal charges. Daw Aung San Suu Kyi is an essential partner for a dialogue in Myanmar’s national reconciliation and urged on the Government not to take any further action that could undermine this important process.”

U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay

"Release her immediately from her existing detention which is illegal, even under Myanmar's own laws. Myanmar authorities might claim Aung San Suu Kyi has breached the conditions of her detention, but they have broken both their own laws and their international human rights obligations”.

    Indonesia

“The charges against her are not appropriate. Why should Aung San Suu Kyi be detained when it was the American national who swam across the waters to her house?”.

    Singapore

Singapore’s foreign ministry said in a statement that it was “dismayed”

    Japanese Foreign Minister Hirofumi Nakasone

“Deep concern” over the new charges.

Endorsed by Not On Our Watch founders George Clooney, Brad Pitt, and Matt Damon, signatories to the statement also include cultural icons Bono, Madonna, Steven Spielberg, Nobel Laureates Professor Elie Wiesel and Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, and Senator John McCain, among others.

“We must not stand by as she is silenced once again. Now is the time for the United Nations and the entire international community to speak clearly, and with one voice: Free Aung San Suu Kyi”.

We would like to express our sincere appreciation over your unwavering support.

  • SOS : Myo Yan Naung Thein's Health is Deteriorating

Burma Democratic Concern (BDC) expressed very seriously concerned and worried over military government denial of giving medical treatment to political prisoner Myo Yan Naung Thein who become paralysed in 2007 as the result of the severe tortured he received during interrogation. Currently Myo Yan Naung Thein is held in Than-Dwe prison which is hundreds of miles away from Rangoon, his home town.

Myo Yan Naung Thein’s health situation is worse than before and no medical treatment is received more than two months now since he complained about his deteriorating health situation.

His legs are stiff and cannot bend at all and people got to carry him for moving. This is the new development of illness build up apart from his neurological problem. He cannot sleep and eat well as the sequences he lost weight.

“I am very sad to learn that in Than-Dwe prison, there is no doctor or medics to look after prisoners. I am sure that this is regime's systematic attempt to kill political dissidents”, said Myo Thein, Director at the Burma Democratic Concern (BDC) in United Kingdom.

Visiting him is very difficult for the families members due to natural barriers. By coach it takes 2 days to get there and roads are very bumpy and dangerous as it built through mountains and jungles. A ticket for the Bus is also very expensive and risky trip indeed.

“The reason why military junta sent political prisoners to remote prisons is that they are also punishing political prisoners' families”, said Khin MAung Win, Director at the Burma Democratic Concern (BDC) in United States.

Myo Yan Naung Thein served 7 years in prison in 1997 due to his leadership in 1996 Students demonstrations. It is second time military regime arrested him after 2007 Saffron Revolution due to his leading role. Military regime tortured him very severely during interrogation and he becomes partially paralysed. According to the neurologist, he needs to take medication regularly and treat his illness appropriately.

"Whenever international attentions divert from these vulnerable political prisoners, they are treated very inhumanely and medical treatment are ignored" said Kyaw Lin Oo, Director at the Burma Democratic Concern (BDC) in Thailand.

  • British Government said 2010 election will entrench military

    07 May 2009

Foreign office minister Bill Rammel said on 01 May 2009 that, “More disappointing has been the regime's stubborn refusal to work for reconciliation and political progress in Burma. Instead of building on international engagement and civil society activism, the regime has pressed ahead with its flawed roadmap process, which looks set to bring about elections in 2010 that entrench military rule. The number of political prisoners, which includes some of those who sought to provide relief in the delta, has doubled.”

“Foreign office minister Bill Rammel comment is very welcoming. How can we trust the junta which ignores to honour the people's true will, implementing 1990 election result? Military regime promised to hand over the power to elections wining party after the 1990 elections but when Aung San Suu Kyi's party won landslide victory, refused to transfer power. Now again, these very generals who rule the country since 1988 declared to hold new elections in 2010 without honouring 1990 elections results,” said Myo Thein, Director at the Burma Democratic Concern (BDC) in United Kingdom. Aung San Suu Kyi’s party, 1990 election wining party-NLD stands is very clear on current situation of Burma with reference to Shwegondine Declaration issued on 29 April 2009.

The stands of the Aung San Suu Kyi’s party, NLD are:

    (a) Release of All the Political Prisoners
(:) Review of the Draft Constitution (2008)
    (c) NLD and ethnic nationalities offices should be reopened immediately
    (d) Recognition of the 1990 Election result
    (e) Political Dialogue

They are the fundamental demands made by legitimate leaders of Burma and if military regime truly wished to see national reconciliation, they must come to dialogue table and agree to implement NLD’s demands.

Bill Rammel went on say that “Burma remains a top priority for this government. We will continue to work with our EU partners, the US and the countries of the region to press for a more fundamental process of peaceful change. The Burmese people have suffered from poverty and poor governance for too long. They deserve a better future. We are determined to help them achieve it."

“We are very encouraged to learn British Government strong commitment for peaceful change in Burma. We would like to see more actions taken by world leaders to achieve justice realities in Burma”, added Myo Thein.
